2 JACK O’CONNELL State Superintendent of Public Instruction 2 Statewide Program Goal To build capacity within local educational agencies (LEAs) to institutionalize effective mathematics and science professional development practices in order to impact student achievement.

3 JACK O’CONNELL State Superintendent of Public Instruction 3 Purpose of Statewide CaMSP Program Increase teachers’ subject matter knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge, and improve instructional strategies. Encourage LEAs and IHEs to form partnerships that focus on long-term professional development. Bring teachers together with IHE faculty, scientists, mathematicians, and engineers. Encourage IHEs to assume greater responsibility for improving mathematics and science teacher education.

4 JACK O’CONNELL State Superintendent of Public Instruction 4 Purpose of CaMSP (continued) Align and support State Board of Education (SBE) adopted mathematics or science standards Ensure that students are prepared for challenging mathematics or science courses. Make evidence-based contributions to the learning and teaching knowledge base. Ensure sustainability by redirecting resources and designing and implementing new policies and practices.

5 JACK O’CONNELL State Superintendent of Public Instruction 5 Program Overview The CaMSP Program is scientifically based professional development for teachers that: Evaluates and researches the effectiveness of the model used. Is provided to a cohort of teachers over multiple years. Increases the achievement of students in mathematics and science. Adds to the knowledge base. Results in change to policy and practices of the partners.

8 JACK O’CONNELL State Superintendent of Public Instruction 8 Fiscal Considerations Project Fiscal Formulas Grant awards based on maximum of $10,000 per participating teacher. 84 hours per teacher = 60 hours + 24 hours Approximately $714 per teacher per day Allowed 15 percent attrition of target (for first year of participation)
