Find Research that Interests You Read about research at different labs. Skim through a paper published by the lab. Contact the principal investigator. David Lambert, Ph.D. We are interested in the roles of basic cellular behaviors in embryonic patterning, especially in the context of RNA localization and asymmetric cell division. At the same time, we examine how the structures of developmental and cellular processes influence patterns of evolutionary change. We address these questions using the embryos of the snail Ilyanassa, which have particular advantages for the study of RNA localization, asymmetric cell division and the evolution of early embryonic patterning.

Summer Courses

Why? – Lighten regular academic year load – Finish some prerequisites – Math? Physics? – Retake a course Can probably take 1-2 courses Summer sessions split into 6-8 wk sessions Here or at home?

Here You may already know the profs – Part time research continuing into academic year? Credits and grades count into GPA Summer housing varies – Res quad, GLC, off campus Rochester is actually nice during the summer! – Lake Ontario – Public Market – Art district, Park Avenue – Jazz festival, bars, etc.

At Home Make sure it’s a good school – 2-4 year accredited institution – No online courses Housing – save $$$ by living/eating at home Part time research Credit transfers over, but not grades

Cost Cheaper at state schools Per credit hour, excluding fees: – SUNY Stony Brook: $207 – U of Colorado: $259 – UMass Amherst: $353 – U of R: $660 – NYU: $1176 What about housing?

Transfer Credit Earliest deadlines start in March Grades do not transfer over Can’t use toward clusters Need Course Approval Form BEFORE the class starts – Class must have similar content to U of R equivalent – Need approval from: CCAS adviser if ELECTIVE Faculty member if Major/Minor requirement Number of credits is based on other school’s credit system

Thinking about med school? From umassmed.edu: – Strongly recommend that you take required courses at your home school – Prefer that required courses are taken during regular academic year “at a rigorous level at a 4 year college or university” Should have demonstrated ability to take rigorous courses during regular academic year Don’t take all of your hard prerequisites over the summer You must submit transcripts from all schools where you have taken courses to AMCAS
