April 24. Mexico Mexicans wearing surgical masks entered the General Hospital in Mexico City. Mexican officials, scrambling to control a swine flu outbreak that has killed at least 16 people and possibly dozens more in recent weeks, shuttered schools from kindergarten to university for millions of young people in and around the capital and urged people with flu symptoms to stay home from work.

April 26. Washington D.C. The global spread of swine flu, a contagious respiratory illness, has caused governments to react. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano declared a public health emergency on Sunday after announcing that 20 cases had been confirmed in the United States. By her side was the White House press secretary, Richard Gibbs.

April 26. New York Officials confirmed eight cases in New York, seven in California, two in Kansas, and one in Ohio. About 100 students at St. Francis Preparatory School in Fresh Meadows, Queens, became sick in the last few days. New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said that all the cases had been mild.

April 26. Tokyo A quarantine officer monitored travelers with a thermographic device at the arrival gate at Narita International Airport, which serves Tokyo. The World Health Organization said that the outbreak was considered "a public health emergency of international concern" but would not decide until Tuesday on whether to raise the pandemic alert level.

April 26. Mexico A member of the Mexican army handed out face masks to tourists and pedestrians in Mexico City on Sunday.

April 27. Taiwan A member of Taiwan's animal disease department disinfected a pig farm as a precaution in Hsichiou, Changhua County, in central Taiwan. Concerns about the potential economic impact of the outbreak sent stock indexes tumbling across the globe. Most Asian and European markets were down by the end of trading Monday, with tourism and airline industry stocks leading the decline.

April 27. Canada Students gathered on the campus of King's-Edgehill School in Windsor, Nova Scotia, Canada. Health officials reported that four students from the school have a mild case of swine flu after a musical and cultural exchange trip between schools in Nova Scotia and the Yucatan Peninsula.

April 27. California A school project was left uncompleted at St. Mel School, in Fair Oaks, Calif. Sacramento County public health and church officials temporarily closed the Catholic school when a student there became ill with what may be swine influenza.

April 29. Mexico Sauceda Gamboa, a suspected drug trafficker, center, wore a face mask as a precaution against swine flu as he was escorted to a news conference after his arrest in Mexico City on Wednesday. Mr. Gamboa is one of Mexico's 24 most-wanted traffickers, according to federal police.
