 Primary resources: Pre-existing attractions such as the natural landscape, ancient ruins  Secondary resources: Infrastructure, accommodations etc.  Tourism growth should improve the living standards of people, but it can create problems like overcrowding, overdevelopment, cultural commercialism and finally community alienation.

 Development of infrastructure such as transport and hotels  Larger variety of man made attractions ie. Disney  Larger affluent population ie. China’s new middle class  Transport improvements, allowing for travel to more exotic, hard to reach areas ie. Antarctica  The development of package tours ie. Cuba

 Tourism is now the world's largest industry. Although about 80% of the world's tourists come from only about 18 countries, this is rapidly changing due to industrialization in countries such as South Korea and China. More people now have disposable incomes than ever before. In addition there are a number of other factors also contributed to this growth:  Increased education levels  the higher the education, the more people are apt to travel  knowledge of foreign languages  Improvements in infrastructure  Transportation (ie. Eurail)  Customs and Immigration  Computer as travel agent  Credit cards  Global merging of transport services, such as the Star Alliance Adapted from Williams

 And although tourism is still increasing, the pace of it has slowed. This is due to a combination of factors including:  Fear of terrorism (post 9-11)  Rise in the price of oil  Decreased disposable incomes (economic collapse of 2008) in MEDCs  Increased awareness of C0 ₂ and climate change

PLOGBUTLER  Allows us to look at dimensions of tourists and destinations;  Does not take into account the economic factors involved for the tourist or lifecycle of the destination ie. Where you want to go, might not be where you can afford to!  Assumes want of survival;  Assumes that intervention will take place for growth;  Does not take into account the psychological perspective of the tourist
