2 NOAA, May 2015 Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites - CGMS Add CGMS agency logo here (in the slide master) Introduction NOAA contributes to CGMS Precipitation Activities in four primary ways: Operating LEO and GEO satellites that make observations in the visible, IR and microwave spectrums Generates operational precipitation and water vapor products Provides ground assets to validate and compliment the satellite observations Makes all available data sets accessible to the CGMS community This presentation will: Summarize NOAA’s satellite assets contributing to the measurement of precipitation Update CGMS on the status of operational precipitation products Note any contributions to HLPP Respond to actions from IPWG-7

3 NOAA, May 2015 Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites - CGMS Add CGMS agency logo here (in the slide master) Introduction The purpose of this paper is to provide an update of precipitation activities at NOAA Primary concerns from NOAA (and IPWG) perspective include: – Mission follow-ons: GCOM-W GPM DMSP – Ensuring seamless geostationary data coverage (e.g., loss of METEOSAT-7) – Coordination and prioritization of new satellite technologies: Cloud and precipitation radars for precipitation process characterization Geostationary microwave and lightning mappers – Access to global validation assets It should be noted that a summary of IPWG-7 will be made in a separate presentation

7 NOAA, May 2015 Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites - CGMS Add CGMS agency logo here (in the slide master) Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites - CGMS Slide: 7 Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites - CGMS  NOAA’s JPSS and GOES-R programs contribute to the CGMS global constellation of satellite measurements capable of producing precipitation measurements (HLPP 1.1.1; 1.4.2, 1.4.4)  NOAA precipitation data sets/products are available to CGMS members in both real time and via archive  NOAA algorithms/methodologies contribute to global approaches applicable to other sensors (HLPP 3.2)  NOAA’s contributions to GSICS significantly improve the calibration of NOAA and other satellites that are used to retrieve precipitation information (HLPP 3.1) Key issues of relevance to CGMS:

8 NOAA, May 2015 Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites - CGMS Add CGMS agency logo here (in the slide master) Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites - CGMS Slide: 8 Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites - CGMS  In order to contribute to broader use by climate (i.e., “interim” climate records), NOAA needs to develop a stronger commitment to routine reprocessing of L1 radiance and L2 precipitation products (beyond it’s climate data record program)  The (potential) diminishing number of passive microwave “imagers” jeopardizes the future accuracy of global precipitation products; firmer commitments are needed by all CGMS members to continue important programs that currently contribute to the satellite “constellation”.  Closer synergy between LEO and GEO programs by CGMS operational agencies (in terms of multi-sensor product lines) would greatly advance the quality of precipitation products To be considered by CGMS (IPWG7 actions):
