10 Kalamata’s Culture Kalamata has a remarkable cultural course for decades The International Dance Festival, which takes place in Kalamata for the last 19 years with tremendous success, hosts famous artists who have shield the history of modern dancing. A very good and active Municipal District Theater offers excellent performances. Τhe Lyceum of Hellenic Women of Kalamata has represented Greece in numerous international festivals, excellently performing Greek traditional dances.

19 The Greek educational system is mainly divided into three levels: Primary Secondary (Gymnasium, Lykeion) University

20 Primary- Secondary Educational system Primary education is divided into: kindergarten lasting one or two years primary school spanning to six years (ages 6 to 12). Secondary education comprises two stages: Gymnasium, a compulsory three-year school (ages 12 to 15) Lykeion (General, Technical) an optional three-year school(ages 15 to 18)

24 General Lykeion Subjects In the 1 st year students attend the subjects we’ve just mentioned and they also have to select a project to carry out. In the 2 nd year students also have to take additional direction subjects relevant to the course they will follow. The 2 nd year has 25 hours of general subjects and 7 or 8 hours of direction subjects and 2 hours of other selected subjects.

25 Pan-Hellenic national examinations In the 3 rd year students also have to take additional direction subjects relevant to the course they will follow. They have 17 hours of general subjects, 12 hours of direction subjects and 2 hours of other selected subjects. At the end of the 3 rd year of Lykeion, the students take hard Panhellenic exams to enter university. Hours per week Class A : 35 Class B: 34-35 Class C: 31

26 After Lykeion After Lykeion students may select to go to University Vocational training Technological Educational Institutes (T.E.I.) University courses typically last 4 years 5 in polytechnics and some technical/art schools 6 in medical schools Postgraduate MSc level courses last from 1 to 2 years Doctorates PhD level from 3 to 6 years

27 Additional tuition There is also a number of private schools operating after school providing supplementary tuition and foreign language. According to recent surveys English is the most commonly spoken foreign language in Greece since it is spoken from the vast majority of people. Less popular languages are French, German and Italian. Consequently, it is widely held that more than 50% of the Greek people speak English.

28 Educated People in Greece According to the statistics of the United Nations concerning the period between 1995-2005, illiterate in Greece is considered only the 3.6 % of the population. The most common ‘victims’ of this phenomenon are the immigrants, the roma, disabled people etc. The 67% of young people between the ages of 18-21 reach an academic level.

30 The school is located in the contemporary part of the city. It is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, schools as it was established in 1930 as “High School of Kalamata”. A lot of eminent citizens have graduated our school. In our school there are 350 students and 35 teachers. Our students achieve great marks in Pan-Hellenic Exams. An 80-90% of our students enter University every year.

31 Environmental Education Within the last 10 years our school has run a number of programs of Environmental Education, mostly on Sunday mornings. About 20 teachers and 1000 students have taken part in these programs. This year our students participate in four environmental programs. Two of them are: "The school garden", in which they are occupied with the configuration and the beautification of the school yard with flowers and trees and “Recycling”, a very serious issue for the people in our city, for Kalamata is one of the first, if not the first city, in Greece in recycling.

33 School achievements Our students have successfully taken part and obtained prizes in a number of national and international competitions (Astronomy Competition, Mathematic Competition etc. ) Additionally, it must be mentioned that many of our students have represented their fellow classmates in the Young Parliament of Greece and in the European Parliament,where they express their opinion regarding the Economy, Education, Human Rights etc.

34 Also they have great success in sport activities as they have won championships in all over the country. And last year our Basketball team won the third place in the Pan- Hellenic School Championship. School achievements
