Laboratori Nazionali del Sud The mass separator system consists on 2 stages, the first stage on two platforms at High Voltage (up to 250 kV). The design transmision efficiency is ~ 100% with a beam of x = y = 4π mm mrad (x 0 =y 0 = 0.2 mm, a 0 =b 0 = 0.2 mm). The mass resolution of each step is: (Pre-separator : 18° magnet and a set of 4 electrostatic quadrupoles) ( ) Pre 180 (Pre-separator : 18° magnet and a set of 4 electrostatic quadrupoles) (I stage: 2 magnets (77° e 90°) and 2 sets of 4 electrostatic quadrupoles) ( ) 1st 2000 (I stage: 2 magnets (77° e 90°) and 2 sets of 4 electrostatic quadrupoles) (II stage: 2 magnets (90°, =2.6 m) and a set of 4 electrostatic quadrupoles) ( ) 2nd 20000 (II stage: 2 magnets (90°, =2.6 m) and a set of 4 electrostatic quadrupoles) Isobaric mass separator

Laboratori Nazionali del Sud LEBI: Low Energy Beam Imager / Identifier The device can be placed at three different positions, depending on the application. Stable (pilot) beams hit directly the CsI(Tl) scintillating plate to produce the 2D transversal profile. RIBs are implanted onto a thin mylar tape placed in front of the plate to avoid its contamination. The emitted radiation (mainly and rays) crosses the plate producing the light spot. CsI (Tl) plate, 1 – 2 mm PMT Hamamatsu R1924A Plastic scintillator (BC 408, 6 x 6 x 5 cm 3 ) up down Diagnostics for Low Energy RIBs RIBs can be implanted also in front of a large plastic scintillator, used for counting and spectroscopy of beta particles emitted from the radionuclides.

Laboratori Nazionali del Sud Work in progress… 1)Improvement of primary beam stability: maximum operations foreseen 200 W. 2)Beam transmission improvements through the Tandem. 3)Further test to optimize transport efficiences in preseparator and tandem coupling line. 4)Maintenance on remote handling systems, water and air treatments, other technological infrastructures.

Laboratori Nazionali del Sud R&D Activities on TIS 1)Better undestanding of diffusion-effusion models and new target design to improve the mechanical stability and to ensure long term operations. 2)Development of HPIS and of the new PIS with Rhenium body to have access to other chemical species ( 15 O and Be included). 3)New target materials (e.g. Foams, Fibers, Ta foils) 4)Careful study of the primary beam in combination with the target material to improve the yields of the desired species. The collaboration with SPES Target Group will play an important role in the achievement of the goals.
