1 A Tour of By John O’Reilly

2 Naperville Public library is the official public library of Naperville Illinois. Naperville Public Library is composed of three different branches spread across the large suburban city. The main library branch that houses library administration is the Nichols Branch located in the heart of downtown Naperville. A smaller neighborhood branch called Naper Blvd. exists in the eastern area of Naperville. The new 95 th Street branch is only ten years old and is located at the most southwest point of Naperville in Will County. Each branch is composed of several department which include: Customer Services, Adult Services, Children’s Services, Computer Lab, and Shelvers. Technical Services and Marketing Services are two departments that are important to NPL’s function as well.

3 Customer Services

4 Customers Services assistants and specialists are responsible for checking materials in and out, collecting fines, creating library cards/accounts, and accepting library collection donations. Customer service assistants and specialists are supervised by a customer services manager who also helps to supervise shelvers. Customer service assistants work tirelessly to sort incoming and outgoing materials from all three Naperville Public Library branches. They also process holds on materials and maintain the hold shelving area where patrons can pick up held materials.

5 Adult Services

6 Adult services acts as the reference desk located in the adult (general) area of the library collection and is staffed by Adult Services librarians who report to the Adult Services Manager. Adult services librarians are charged with collection development, assisting patrons with research, collection maintenance, supervision of shelvers, and assisting patrons with access to online resources such as downloadable e-books, Rosetta Stone, and other databases. Adult services librarians are also responsible for developing all libray programs outside of Children’s Services.

7 Children’s Services

8 Children’s services acts as the reference desk for inquiring children and their parents who need help locating and attaining access to books, audio/visual media, and online educational resources. Children’s librarians are supervised by the Children’s Services Manager. Children's librarians also perform “Family Story Time” and “Make it Take it” arts and crafts programs.

9 Computer Lab

10 Computer lab staff offer troubleshooting and assistance with the wide variety of software programs, internet access, and printing/copying hardware Naperville Public Library has to offer. Computer lab staff also monitor the use of computer equipment to ensure a safe experience for users void of inappropriate or volatile content. Lab staff are also responsible for setting up entertainment equipment used in all library programs.

11 Shelving

12 Shelvers are each dedicated to one area of the collection. The heightened level a shelver has with his or her area of the collection works to ensure more accurate shelving and shelf maintenance.

13 Technical Services

14 A world unto it’s own the Technical Services department may not interact directly with patrons but nevertheless play and all important role in the development of Naperville Public Library’s ever expanding collection. Technical Services librarians and assistants work with Baker & Talor, and other vender’s selectors to chose materials and approve the purchasing materials appropriate for the library’s collection. Technical Services also performs routine maintenance on damaged materials or makes the decision to replace materials beyond repair.

15 Marketing Services

16 Although Marketing Services staff may not directly interact with patrons and public they are however the face of Naperville Public Library as they develop all advertising for the library and its services by creating program guides, flyers, posters, pamphlets, logos, and press releases.
