2 Poetic Activities 2.2 and 3.1  In groups brainstorm different ways of using poetry in the classroom. Perhaps you thought of some of these: Change the meaning /words of the poem to their opposites. Role play the poem. Mime the parts, guess the words. Interview one of the characters in a poem, or the poet. Give learners the title, and they write the words (or the opposite give the words and they write the title. Draw the poem Give one verse, eg. The middle one, and they write the first and final verses.

3 Create an activity for a poem  Now, take the poem you have received and plan an activity for a grade level that you teach.  Present your plan to the other group.  Would you use any of the ideas with your own learners?

5 Word stress and linking What is word stress? What is sentence stress? What is linking? How do they affect how a poem is read out?

6 Using your voice Listen to the poem and mark any words which are stressed and any words which link together. How does the reader use her voice? What words does she stress? What words link together?

7 Poetry and productive skills Read the article quickly (handout 5.1) In pairs discuss the questions: Which of the ideas surprised you? Which of the tips did you find the most helpful? Can you add any more ideas? Were any of your ideas in Activity 2.2 similar to those in the article?
