1 Music all around Musical Culture and Worldwide language

2 A Little Background  Similar to art, music tell us about cultures and peoples of the past  Archaeologists have found rattles, flutes, and harp like instruments around Mesopotamia, dating back to 2000 BC!  It is thought that these instruments were used for entertainment in the hanging gardens of Babylon  The use of musical instruments from ancient peoples tells us that they were not that different from us  Similar to us, they found importance in the arts

3 A Little Background  These ancient peoples (obviously) did not have written music  We did not get written music until about the 9 th century AD, in Western Europe  We only have about 1000 years of WRITTEN MUSIC  We only have about 100 years of RECORDED MUSIC

4 Discovering New Soundscapes  As Americans we all have some liking for rhythm and blues, gospel, jazz and other music given to us by African Americans.  Chinese music- visit Chinatown or Chinese New Year celebration  Germany, Italy, Japan, or Mexico when we visit different restaurants  You are probably familiar with a wider variety of music than you think.

5 Developing Empathy  The ability to look at the world from another person’s perspective  This will help us know other people better and be able to be empathetic towards them and their culture

6 Finding Similarities  People from all cultures value music  Music serves many of the same purposes for multiple cultures Ex. (ceremonial, religious, and social)  Similarities in music across the globe indicate that human beings are far more alike than different

7 Music and Culture  A lot of music in America comes from other countries  We live in a multicultural society and because of this, we have many different types of music  You are probably more familiar with a variety of the world’s music than you know.  Think about music at different restaurants

8 Music and Culture (Use CD from Music of the World)  Activity -listen to the following music and rate it based on familiarity-  0= None  1= Little  2=Some  3= Great  Tell where you think the music is from, and what makes you think that

9 What does music say about our culture? New Orleans  Mardi Gras music  Saints song Mandeville  Fight Song! Go BIG SKIPPERS!
