Without these key body parts, we wouldn't be able to stand, walk, run, or even sit. If we didn't not have bones, we would be like jellyfish as bones make up the framework of our bodies. This framework is called the skeleton.

9 Cartilage Our skeleton is initially made up of cartilage, but most of it is replaced by bone. The cartilages that remain in adults are found mainly in region where more flexible skeletal tissues are needed. Skeletal cartilage is made of cartilage tissue that consists primarily of water. The high water content accounts for its resilience.

The Skeleton Is Divided Into Two Distinct Parts: The Axial skeleton consists of bones that form the axis of the body and support and protect the organs of the head, neck, and trunk. The Appendicular skeleton is composed of bones that anchor the appendages to the axial skeleton.

Upper and lower extremities Long bones are longer than they are wide and work as levers. Upper and lower extremities Flat bones have broad surfaces for protection of organs & attachment of muscles Short bones are short, cube-shaped, found in the wrists &ankles Irregular bones are all others that do not fall into the previous categories. Having varied shapes, sizes& surfaces features & include bones of vertebrae and a few in the skull. Four categories of BONE

Our bones are made up of different kinds of minerals like calcium, phosphorus, sodium but calcium is the top mineral for bones. You would be surprised to know that our blood is made inside the bones. It is made inside many of the bones, this part of the bones is called bone- marrow, it is very soft part of the bones.

Babies' have over 300 bones, but by the time, they become adults, they have 206 bones! It is not that these bones are lost but few smaller bones combine together to make bigger bones. In our back, we have our spine. It has 26 bones, these are like circles with wings on the sides and back. These bones are called the vertebrae.

This protection is provided by a cage like structure called rib-cage. This rib-cage is made up of bones. There are 12 pairs of ribs, each pair is attached to the spine at the back. Our arm has 3 bones - the humerus in the upper part, the radius and the ulna in the lower art of the arm. Do you know, more than 50% of bones in our body are found in our hands & our feet for example each hand has 19 bones! Similarly in our feet, there are 52 bones.

Walking, jogging, running and other physical activities are important in keeping your bones strong and healthy. Riding your bike, basketball, soccer, gymnastics, baseball, dancing, skateboarding and other activities are all good for your bones. Make sure you wear or use the proper equipment like a helmet, kneepads, shin guards, mats, knee pads, etc... to keep those bones safe. Strengthen your skeleton by drinking milk and eating other dairy products (like low-fat cheese, frozen yogurt, and ice cream). They all contain calcium, which helps bones harden and become strong.
