Isaiah 5

Isaiah 5:1-2 “Now I will sing for the one I love a song about His vineyard: My beloved had a vineyard on a rich and fertile hill. He plowed the land, cleared its stones, and planted it with the best vines. In the middle He built a watchtower and carved a winepress in the nearby rocks.”

Isaiah 5:3-4,“Then He waited for a harvest of sweet grapes, but the grapes that grew were bitter. Now, you people of Jerusalem and Judah, you judge between Me and My vineyard. ‎ 4 What more could I have done for My vineyard that I have not already done? When I expected sweet grapes, why did My vineyard give Me bitter grapes?”

“What were the “wild grapes” that the nation produced instead of the “good grapes” that God sought for? Sin. In the six “woes” that follow, Isaiah named the sins that brought judgment on the land.” Wiersbe

Isaiah 5:5-6, “Now let Me tell you what I will do to My vineyard: I will tear down its hedges and let it be destroyed. I will break down its walls and let the animals trample it. I will make it a wild place where the vines are not pruned and the ground is not hoed, a place overgrown with briers and thorns. I will command the clouds to drop no rain on it.” ‎

Isaiah 5:7 The nation of Israel is the vineyard of the LORD of Heaven’s Armies. The people of Judah are His pleasant garden. He expected a crop of justice, but instead He found oppression. He expected to find righteousness, but instead He heard cries of violence.”

“ In the original Hebrew, the paired words for justice (mishpat) and bloodshed (mispach), righteousness (tsedaqah) and outcry (tse'aqah) create a resemblance of sounds.”

The central ethical principles of the OT are Justice and Righteousness. Justice involves both a concern for punishment and a concern for fairness. Enriching oneself at the expense of others is viewed as unjust.

Since upholding the basic rights and needs of the less fortunate is central to the Bible’s concept of justice, oppressing the poor and defenseless is considered unjust. Righteousness is regularly paired with justice in the prophetic writings (Amos 5:24; Isa 32:16; Hosea 2:19). Cont.

“Right moral living is an essential component of acting justly toward others.”

Isaiah 5:8-10 (Woe) “What sorrow for you who buy up house after house and field after field, until everyone is evicted and you live alone in the land. ‎ 9 But I have heard the LORD of Heaven’s Armies swear a solemn oath:”

‎ “Many houses will stand deserted; even beautiful mansions will be empty. Ten acres of vineyard will not produce even six gallons of wine. Ten baskets of seed will yield only one basket of grain.”

Leviticus 25:13-17 “In this Year of Jubilee, each of you shall return to his possession. And if you sell anything to your neighbor or buy from your neighbor's hand, you shall not oppress one another. 'According to the number of years after the Jubilee you shall buy from your neighbor,”

“and according to the number of years of crops he shall sell to you. 'According to the multitude of years you shall increase its price, and according to the fewer number of years you shall diminish its price; for he sells to you according to the number of the years of the crops.”

17 'Therefore you shall not oppress one another, but you shall fear your God; for I am the LORD your God.”

Isaiah 5:11-12 (Woe)“What sorrow for those who get up early in the morning looking for a drink of alcohol and spend long evenings drinking wine to make themselves flaming drunk. ‎ 12 They furnish wine and lovely music at their grand parties— lyre and harp, tambourine and flute—”

“but they never think about the LORD or notice what He is doing.”

Isaiah 5:13-15 “So My people will go into exile far away because they do not know Me. Those who are great and honored will starve, and the common people will die of thirst. The grave is licking its lips in anticipation, opening its mouth wide.”

“The great and the lowly and all the drunken mob will be swallowed up. “Humanity will be destroyed, and people brought down; even the arrogant will lower their eyes in humiliation.”

1Peter 5:5 “Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for "God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble."

2Kings 24:14-16 “Also he (King Nebuchadnezzar) carried into captivity all Jerusalem: all the captains and all the mighty men of valor, ten thousand captives, and all the craftsmen and smiths. None remained except the poorest people of the land.”

15 “And he carried Jehoiachin captive to Babylon. The king's mother, the king's wives, his officers, and the mighty of the land he carried into captivity from Jerusalem to Babylon.”

16 “All the valiant men, seven thousand, and craftsmen and smiths, one thousand, all who were strong and fit for war, these the king of Babylon brought captive to Babylon.”

‎ Isaiah 5:16-17 “But the LORD of Heaven’s Armies will be exalted by His justice. The holiness of God will be displayed by His righteousness.”

“In that day lambs will find good pastures, and fattened sheep and young goats will feed among the ruins.”

Isaiah 5:18 (Woe)“What sorrow for those who drag their sins behind them with ropes made of lies, who drag wickedness behind them like a cart! ‎ ”

“A strange sight. A heavy cart is being laboriously drawn, not by work animals but by men; yoked, straining, tugging men. They are yoked like beasts and hitched to a heavy wagon, and, just as beasts are forced to do, so these men draw after them the heavy wagon…”

“This wagon is their own iniquity and sin, and so by such a figure we are made to see the close connection between the sin and the one who commits that sin.” Edward Young

Isaiah 5:19 “They even mock God and say, “Hurry up and do something! We want to see what you can do. Let the Holy One of Israel carry out His plan, for we want to know what it is.”

2Peter 3:4-6 "Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation." For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, by which the world that then existed, perished, being flooded with water.”

Isaiah 5:20 (Woe)“What sorrow for those who say that evil is good and good is evil, that dark is light and light is dark, that bitter is sweet and sweet is bitter.”

Isaiah 5:21 (Woe)“What sorrow for those who are wise in their own eyes and think themselves so clever.”

Proverbs 1:7 “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction..”

Isaiah 5:22-23 (Woe)“What sorrow for those who are heroes at drinking wine and boast about all the alcohol they can hold. ‎ 23 They take bribes to let the wicked go free, and they punish the innocent.”

Isaiah 5:24-25 “Therefore, just as fire licks up stubble and dry grass shrivels in the flame, so their roots will rot and their flowers wither. For they have rejected the law of the LORD of Heaven’s Armies; they have despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.”

25 “That is why the LORD’s anger burns against His people, and why He has raised His fist to crush them. The mountains tremble, and the corpses of His people litter the streets like garbage. But even then the LORD’s anger is not satisfied. His fist is still poised to strike!”

Hebrews 10:31 “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”

Isaiah 5:26-30 “He will send a signal to distant nations far away and whistle to those at the ends of the earth. They will come racing toward Jerusalem. They will not get tired or stumble. They will not stop for rest or sleep. Not a belt will be loose, not a sandal strap broken.” ‎

28 Their arrows will be sharp and their bows ready for battle. Sparks will fly from their horses’ hooves, and the wheels of their chariots will spin like a whirlwind. ‎ 29 They will roar like lions, like the strongest of lions.. ‎

“Growling, they will pounce on their victims and carry them off, and no one will be there to rescue them 30 They will roar over their victims on that day of destruction like the roaring of the sea. If someone looks across the land, only darkness and distress will be seen; even the light will be darkened by clouds.”

“There is no doubt that the Prophet Isaiah sees the army of the Assyrians, then that of the Babylonians, under King Nebuchadnezzar, and even that of the Romans in 70 A.D.,

“But the final fulfillment of these words does not dawn until the advance of the terrible armies of Gog and Magog at the time of Israel’s initial restoration after the Rapture of the Church.” Harry Bultema
