How can we classify different types of matter based on similarities and differences? Starter: Create the GO that you see on the dry erase board. In your bin you have four samples of matter. Your goal is to classify each vial as an element, compound, heterogeneous mixture or homogeneous mixture. Do this on your own. 1-Aquarium gravel, 2 – sugar, 3 – salt water, 4 – sulfur, 5 – Lead, 6 – glass and plastic beads, 8 – sand, 9 – copper, 10 - water

Share As a group take turns sharing the content about: elements, compounds, homogeneous, and heterogeneous mixtures. Complete the discussion in that order.

How can we classify different types of matter? Pure Substance has a uniform or defined composition

How can we classify different types of matter? Types of Pure substances Element Simplest form of matter (cannot be separated) Only contains one type of atom Over 100 of them on the periodic table Represented by symbols (one or two, second is always lower case) Hand out Periodic Table

Periodic Table Yes! You need to memorize 31 elements. Quiz on 9/28

How can we classify different types of matter? Compound Chemical union of 2 or more different elements (must be separated chemically) Represented by a formula CO 2

How can we classify different types of matter? Mixtures – two of more substances physically combined together.

How can we classify different types of matter? Homogeneous or Solution Homo- means same Uniform composition and properties throughout No discernable parts Can be liquid, solid, or gas Example: air, Gatorade, steel

How can we classify different types of matter? Heterogeneous hetero- means different Has different parts with different properties Is not uniform throughout Has visible parts Examples: chicken noodle soup, tossed salad, tree

How can we classify different types of matter? Activity: Complete your “After lesson” column. Classify the substances again and see if you were correct the first time or needed to modify your classification. Defend your choice with you class notes. 1-Aquarium gravel, 2 – sugar, 3 – salt water, 4 – sulfur, 5 – Lead, 6 – glass and plastic beads, 8 – sand, 9 – copper, 10 - water

Review Last night’s HW

Tonight’s HW due tomorrow Read Ch 2.2 and 2.3 as a review from today's lesson and complete the following. Pg: 47 # 14, 15 Pg: 52 # 20-27

Chemistry Starter: LEQ: How can physical and chemical changes be recognized? Homework: Have a good weekend and memorize the symbols for the 31 elements. Starter: Define the following: Chemical change Physical change

Review Homework

How can physical and chemical changes be recognized? Physical Change: Altering a substance with out changing its composition. Chemical Change: when a change occurs and a different composition is formed Ask yourself: Do I still have the same exact substance/s? if you answer no a chemical change occurred.

Data Table for Lab Create this… NOW! Station #ObservationsPhysical or chemical Change – WHY? 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

How can physical and chemical changes be recognized? With you lab partner, go about the each station. Read the directions, follow the procedures, write down observations, and determine if each experiment is a chemical or physical change. Use you data chart to record all data. Goal for Friday, Sept 24: Complete 5 stations.
