WIR SCHAFFEN WISSEN – HEUTE FÜR MORGEN Steps towards beam commissioning: ID group Thomas Schmidt :: Insertion Devices :: Paul Scherrer Institut SwissFEL Commissioning Workshop, 21/22 March 2016 FHNW Campus Brugg-Windisch

U15 in-vacuum undulator Page 2

U15 installation (SARUN15) Page 3 (Please give a concise 1–2-page summary of what you provide for SwissFEL) (Kurze Zusammenfassung des für SwissFEL bereitgestellten Systems) Alignment Quadrupoles 5 axis cam-shaft mover: x, z, pitch, yaw, roll correction PS: x, z, earth field Beckhoff PLC on bord gap, mover, T,...

U15 control Page 4 5 axis cam-shaft mover: x, z, pitch, yaw, roll correction PS: x, z Gap / Shift Mover Gap / Shift Mover Gap / Shift Mover Gap / Shift Mover VME EPICS Event-trigger Mono EtherCAT real-time synchronization, scans Ethernet slow motion, diagnostics Beckhoff Motion Control tunnel Control room

Vacuum, as undulators are part of the vacuum system Electricity, once an undulator comes in it needs to be wired Controls, has to get in contact with the undulators and test systems without beam PS group / Magnet group Diagnostic, needs undulator to support i.e. dose detector. and ast not least, Transport to come in Survey to find the best place... U15 most important interfaces to (dependences on) other expert groups Page 5 (Which other systems are you depending on, which systems depend on you? How are the interfaces organized?) (Welches sind die wichtigsten Abhängigkeiten zu anderen Systemen? Wie sind die Schnittstellen organisiert?)

after 1 st Yuri run Hardware installation: adjust magnets

after 3 rd Yuri run Hardware installation: adjust magnets

Hardware installation: trajectory

total opimization in only 3 days! instead of > 1month semi automatic model based straight forward Marco Calvi and Marc Brügger! Hardware installation: results

U15 Vacuum after installation for installation in tunnel and install intersection vacuum chamber need to vent the undulator again (2-3 weeks) U15

Our steps towards beam commissioning/operation: System commissioning in OSFA before beam Page 17 Undulator Alignment Procedure tested on virtual machine (Romain) Controls integration started with installed undulators in the tunnel problems: cabling gradually available with U15 delivery

basic functionability for every undulator will / has to be tested before start gap mover phase matcher alignment quad corrector PS Temperature control hint: we have 8 temperature sensors (at the corners) to monitor temperature profile in the tunnel Our steps towards beam commissioning/operation: Handover to operation, pre-beam checks Page 18 (Modalities, concrete plans, target date?) (Wie wird das System dem Betrieb übergeben? Gibt es Pläne für Prebeam-Checks? Termine?)

What makes us happy and worry Page 19 the quality of the work from involved companies the optimization of the undulators works really smooth people are motivated delays eat up the time for controls at the end shouldn‘t we have planned access to the tunnel a day per week during commissiong? (Which aspects of installation/commissioning are working well for your group?) (Wo gibt es Grund für Zuversicht und Zufriedenheit im Zusammenhang mit Installation und Inbetriebnahme?)
