7 HDT 9/14/15 John Gast, American Progress, 1872 What do you see in this painting? The floating woman is heading west. What do you think she represents? How is this symbolized in the painting?

8 Map of the United States, 1872 By 1872 the US has already expanded to the Pacific Ocean. This is after the Louisiana Purchase and War with Mexico. This painting is basically celebrating what had already happened.

9 Contemporary Map of the 1816 United States In 1816, we hadn’t spread that far yet. This is before the annexation of Texas and the Mexican War.

10 John Melish, Map of the U.S. with the contiguous British and Spanish Possessions,1816 This is before the US had added the new territory. Why do you think Melish decided to draw the map this way?

“To present a picture of it was desirable in every point of view. The map so constructed, shows at a glance the whole extent of the United States territory from sea to sea; and in tracing the probable expansion of the human race from east to west, the mind finds an agreeable resting place on its western limits. The view is complete, and leaves nothing to be wished for. It also adds to the beauty and symmetry [balance] of the map; which will, it is confidently believed, be found one of the most useful and ornamental [decorative] works ever executed[created] in this country.” –John Melish, 1816 1. According to Melish, why did he decide to draw the map of the United States thisway? 2. How does this relate to Manifest Destiny?

The US spreads from sea to shining sea. Let’s take a look at how different groups handled the expansion of the US. SEA TO SHINING SEA

Answer these questions about the song in your notebook : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKBqz6FWvlo 1.What mood or emotions does the melody or lyrics evoke? 2.What region of the country do you think this song is referring to? How can you tell? 3. Do you think the settlement of this region had a more positive effect or a more negative effect on the person or people who wrote this song? How can you tell? 4. Do you think the settlement of this region had the same effect on all the different groups of people who lived there? Why or why not?

As you listen to “Home on the Range”, follow along with the lyrics below. Home on the RangeOh, give me a home where the buffalo roam,Where the deer and the antelope play,Where seldom is heard a discouraging word,And the skies are not cloudy all day.ChorusHome, home on the range,Where the deer and the antelope play,Where seldom is heard a discouraging word,And the skies are not cloudy all day.How often at night when the heavens are bright,With the light of the glittering stars,I stood there amazed and I asked as I gazed,Does their glory exceed that of ours. Chorus

“Home on the Range” appears to have been written in 1885 by a group of prospectors in a cabin near Leadville, Colorado. It was popular throughout the Southwest in the 1880s and 1890s and is now recognized as the state song of Kansas. Listen for teacher assigned partners
