I. Hitler’s Early Years A.Hitler was born in 1889 in Austria. B. Wanted to become an artist, but failed. C. Fought in World War I for Germany. Was devastated when Germany lost, hated Treaty of Versailles. Why?

II. The Rise of the Nazis A.In 1920, Hitler joins the National Socialist German Workers Party, called the Nazis for short. They are a Fascist group. B.Hitler quickly becomes the leader of the Nazis. What natural ability did Hitler exploit to gain support? How was Adolf Hitler as a party leader? How were members promoted in the Nazi Party?

II. The Rise of the Nazis C. In November 1923, Hitler and the Nazis try to take control of the German government in Munich (Beer Hall Putsch). They fail, Hitler ends up in jail for nine months.

II. The Rise of the Nazis D. While in jail, Hitler writes a book called Mein Kampf (My struggle), discussing his beliefs and goals for Germany: 1. Aryans: Germans (especially those with blonde hair and blue eyes) are a “master race.” 2. Jews: Subhuman, responsible for Germany losing World War I and the economic collapse of the country. 3. Lebensraum: “Living space.” The Germans are a great people who require more land. He promised to get the space by conquering Eastern Europe and Russia.

II. The Rise of the Nazis E. Nazis are ignored until 1929, when the Depression starts. How did many Germans view Adolf Hitler at first? What economic developments helped the Nazis gain support? How did most Germans feel about their democratic government, the Weimar Republic?

II. The Rise of the Nazis F. 30 percent of Germans were unemployed, Germany’s government (Weimar Republic) had no idea what to do. G. Germans now turn to Hitler, looking for firm leadership. By 1932, the Nazis are the largest party in Germany. Which other political party was gaining support at this time? What was the relationship like between the Nazis and this political party? Why do you think the bankers and businessmen began to support Hitler?
