1 MEDICAID NURSE AIDE ORIENTATION Mason Co. ATC Mary Beth Riggins R.N.

2 MNA TRAINING Attendance Policy: Students are not eligible to sit for the state MNA exam without completing a minimum of 16 clinical hours & a minimum of 75 classroom hours Validation through the Nurse Aide Registry & Abuse Registry with no finding of neglect, abuse, or misappropriation of resident property

3 CLINICAL UNIFORMS & NAMETAGS White or ceil Blue is the color we will wear to the Nursing Home (White Shoes) Lab aprons are provided for clinicals Each student will wear a name tag that will be made for them If you are not in proper uniform or don’t have your name tag then you cannot attend the clinical that day & you will receive a zero grade

4 COURSE EVALUATIONS Students must fill out an evaluation on the teacher & the MNA course at the end of the course

5 HEPATITIS B VACCINATION Every student & parent must sign this form acknowledging that they have been told of the risk of acquiring Hepatitis B virus as a healthcare provider within a clinical site. If the student has obtained the Hepatitis B immunizations (3 injections), the instructor will need a copy of that record to keep on file with the dates they were received. If a student is interested in receiving the immunization shots they will be responsible for the cost to become vaccinated.

6 LIABILITY INSURANCE Students must have medical liability insurance coverage before they will be allowed to go to a clinical site The student is responsible for this expense $15 each, due 8/31/12

7 STATEMENT OF UNDERSTANDING Every student & parent must sign this form acknowledging the fact that students will provide care to patients in a clinical setting Students will understand the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), confidentiality, and adherence to all clinical area policies and procedures (failure to do so can result in removal from the program)

8 SKILLS CHECK-OFF The student will be responsible for learning the MNA skills and then demonstrating the skill & knowledge for each procedure in the lab The instructor will sign & date when the student has demonstrated competency with each procedure

9 TB SKIN TEST Each student is required to have a negative TB skin test before they can go to a clinical site The student can obtain a TB skin test at either the Health Department or their doctor’s office with a copy of the report brought or sent to the instructor prior to a clinical experience The student is responsible for the cost of this test

10 MNA TESTS A minimum of 3 written tests will be given during the course, average of 8 test. The student must have passed all written tests with a minimum score of at least 70% Final course grade will be written tests & skill check-off scores combined

11 TEXTBOOKS Mosby’s Textbook & Workbook for Long-Term Care Assistants by Sorrentino/Gorek- latest edition Textbooks will be provided for each student & returned at the end of the course Workbooks will be paid for by the student at the beginning of the course & students will keep after end of course

12 State Competency Testing You must have a state photo I.D. or drivers license Cost is $20.00 You must have an original Social Security card (not laminated) Your name must be accurate on both of these & match completely If you do not have these documents on the date of testing you will be required to re-register & re- pay for the test again

13 COMPETENCY EVALUATION The state evaluation consists of a written test and a skills demonstration The skills demonstration aspect of the exam will have five (5) skills randomly selected from the pool of evaluation items where at least 70% of the skills are demonstrated with accuracy & 100% of the critical steps are performed The written test will be a 75 multiple-choice written examination in which the student must make at least a 70% (raw score of 52 or higher) in order to pass

14 HOW DO I PASS THE TEST A critical step is defined as a step within a task that relates to physical safety of the resident (side rails & call light) or medical asepsis (infection control) such as washing your hands & putting on gloves Sequencing of steps will not be considered critical unless it becomes a physical safety or medical asepsis violation as defined above

15 CAN I RE-TAKE THE TEST?? A test candidate who fails either part of the written or skills portion of the test may reschedule to take the exam at the next available testing date If the candidate fails the performance but passes the written test, they will only have to re-take the performance test including all 5 skills again A test candidate has 3 opportunities to successfully complete the competency evaluation & be placed on the Nurse Aide Registry within one year of completion of their training Test candidates that fail the assessment 3 times are required to complete an approved nurse aide training program again before they can re-test

16 TEST SCORES Each candidate will receive their test scores in the mail within 30 days of testing The Tech Center will also receive a copy of your scores If the candidate successfully passes the competency evaluation their name will be forwarded to the Kentucky Board of Nursing and will be placed on the Nurse Aide Registry

17 WHAT ARE SKILLS?? Blood pressure, pulse, & respirations Handwashing Small skill Medium skill Large skill MEMORIZE THEM ALL!!
