Numbers 25-26, 31 Israel’s Failure & Balaam’s End Balaam’s End
2
Numbers 22:1–4 ( NASB 95) 1 Then the sons of Israel journeyed, and camped in the plains of Moab beyond the Jordan opposite Jericho. 2 Now Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites. 3 So Moab was in great fear because of the people, for they were numerous; and Moab was in dread of the sons of Israel. 4 Moab said to the elders of Midian, “Now this horde will lick up all that is around us, as the ox licks up the grass of the field.”
3
Genesis 19:36-37 the Moabites 19:36-37 As a result, both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their own father. 37 When the older daughter gave birth to a son, she named him Moab. He became the ancestor of the nation now known as the Moabites. 25:1–2 Midian…” 25:1–2 Abraham married another wife, whose name was Keturah. She gave birth to…Midian…”
4
Numbers 23:9 set apart from other nationsNo misfortune is in his plan for Jacob; no trouble is in store for Israel No curse can touch Jacob; no magic has any power against Israel 9 I see them from the cliff tops; I watch them from the hills. I see a people who live by themselves, set apart from other nations… 21 No misfortune is in his plan for Jacob; no trouble is in store for Israel. For YaHWeH their God is with them; He has been proclaimed their king… 23 No curse can touch Jacob; no magic has any power against Israel…”
5
Psalm 106:35–36 ( NLT ) they mingled They worshiped 35 Instead, they mingled among the pagans and adopted their evil customs. 36 They worshiped their idols, which led to their downfall.

Numbers 25-26, 31 Israel’s Failure & Balaam’s End Balaam’s End
7
Numbers 25:1-3 sexual relations with local Moabite women worshiped the gods of Moab 1 While the Israelites were camped at Acacia Grove, some of the men defiled themselves by having sexual relations with local Moabite women. 2 These women invited them to attend sacrifices to their gods, so the Israelites feasted with them and worshiped the gods of Moab. 3 In this way, Israel joined in the worship of Baal of Peor, causing YaHWeH’s anger to blaze against his people.
8
Numbers 24:25 “Then Balaam and Balak returned to their homes.”
9
Numbers 31:16 ( NIV 84) who followed Balaam’s advice and were the means of turning the Israelites away from YaHWeH “They were the ones who followed Balaam’s advice and were the means of turning the Israelites away from YaHWeH in what happened at Peor, so that a plague struck the L ORD ’s people. This event demonstrates the subtlety of Satan; for what he could not curse, he would corrupt both by idolatry and immorality. Ed Hindson
10
Revelation 2:12–14 ( NASB 95) the teaching of Balaam, who kept teaching Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel 12 “And to the angel of the church in Pergamum write: The One who has the sharp two-edged sword says this… 14 ‘But I have a few things against you, because you have there some who hold the teaching of Balaam, who kept teaching Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols and to commit acts of immorality.
11
1 John 2:16 ( NASB 95) the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. good for food a delight to the eyes desirable to make one wise Genesis 3:6 (NASB95) 6 When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate.
12
Hosea 9:10 ( NLT ) But then they deserted me for Baal-peor, giving themselves to that shameful idol. Soon they became vile, as vile as the god they worshiped. 10 The L ORD says, “O Israel, when I first found you, it was like finding fresh grapes in the desert. When I saw your ancestors, it was like seeing the first ripe figs of the season. But then they deserted me for Baal-peor, giving themselves to that shameful idol. Soon they became vile, as vile as the god they worshiped.
13
Psalm 106:28 ( NLT ) ate sacrifices offered to the dead! Then our ancestors joined in the worship of Baal at Peor; they even ate sacrifices offered to the dead! out of control (“to play”, “broken loose” – “uncover”, “naked”) Exodus 32:25 (ESV) Now when Moses saw that the people were out of control; for Aaron had let them get out of control (“to play”, “broken loose” – “uncover”, “naked”) to be a derision among their enemies.
14
1 John 5:21 ( NASB 95) Little children, guard yourselves from idols. NLT: “Dear children, keep away from anything that might take God’s place in your hearts.” So, my dear friends, flee from the worship of idols. 1 Corinthians 10:11–14 (NLT) 11 These things happened to them as examples for us. They were written down to warn us who live at the end of the age… 14 So, my dear friends, flee from the worship of idols.
15
None can prevail against God’s people if they are not overcome by their inbred lusts; nor can any enchantment hurt them, but the enticements of worldly interests and pleasures. Those are our worst enemies who draw us to sin, for that is the greatest mischief any man can do us.
16
25:4-5 4 YaHWeH issued the following command to Moses: “Seize all the ringleaders and execute them before YaHWeH in broad daylight, so his fierce anger will turn away from the people of Israel.” 5 So Moses ordered Israel’s judges, “Each of you must put to death the men under your authority who have joined in worshiping Baal of Peor.”
17
2 Peter 2:13–15 ( ESV ) Forsaking the right way, they have gone astray. They have followed the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved gain from wrongdoing, “…They love to indulge in evil pleasures in broad daylight. 14 They have eyes full of adultery, insatiable for sin. They entice unsteady souls. They have hearts trained in greed. Accursed children! Forsaking the right way, they have gone astray. They have followed the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved gain from wrongdoing,
18
25:6 Just then one of the Israelite men brought a Midianite woman into his tent (Lit. “to his family”), right before the eyes of Moses and all the people, as everyone was weeping at the entrance of the Tabernacle.
19
25:7-9 (Lit. “the”) 7 When Phinehas son of Eleazar and grandson of Aaron the priest saw this, he jumped up and left the assembly. He took a spear 8 and rushed after the man into his (Lit. “the”) tent. Phinehas thrust the spear all the way through the man’s body and into the woman’s stomach. So the plague against the Israelites was stopped, 9 but not before 24,000 people had died.
20
Psalm 106:29–31 ( NLT ) 29 They angered YaHWeH with all these things, so a plague broke out among them. 30 But Phinehas had the courage to intervene, and the plague was stopped. 31 So he has been regarded as a righteous man ever since that time. The priests were to represent God to the people. This is exactly what Phinehas did on this occasion. He executed God’s wrath against sin and punished the sinners. Tom Constable
21
Ephesians 5:11–14 ( NLT ) expose them. But their evil intentions will be exposed when the light shines on them, 14 for the light makes everything visible. 11 Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead, expose them. 12 It is shameful even to talk about the things that ungodly people do in secret. 13 But their evil intentions will be exposed when the light shines on them, 14 for the light makes everything visible. This is why it is said, “Awake, O sleeper, rise up from the dead, and Christ will give you light.”
22
25:12-13 12 Now tell him that I am making my special covenant of peace with him. 13 In this covenant, I give him and his descendants a permanent right to the priesthood, for in his zeal for Me, his God, he purified the people of Israel, making them right with Me.” This will find final fulfillment when the descendants of Phinehas through Zadok’s branch of Phinehas’ family serve God in the millennial system of worship by offering memorial sacrifices in the temple. Tom Constable
23
25:14-15 14 The Israelite man killed with the Midianite woman was named Zimri son of Salu, the leader of a family from the tribe of Simeon. 15 The woman’s name was Cozbi; she was the daughter of Zur, the leader of a Midianite clan.
24
25:16-18 16 Then YaHWeH said to Moses, 17 “Attack the Midianites and destroy them, 18 because they assaulted you with deceit and tricked you into worshiping Baal of Peor, and because of Cozbi, the daughter of a Midianite leader, who was killed at the time of the plague because of what happened at Peor.”
25
31:1-6 Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest led them into battle 1 Then YaHWeH said to Moses, 2 “On behalf of the people of Israel, take revenge on the Midianites for leading them into idolatry. After that, you will die and join your ancestors.”… 6 Then Moses sent them out, 1,000 men from each tribe, and Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest led them into battle.
26
31:7-8 They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword. 7 They attacked Midian as YaHWeH had commanded Moses, and they killed all the men. 8 All five of the Midianite kings—Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba—died in the battle. They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword.
27
Jude 11 ( NASB 95) Woe to them! They have taken the way of Cain; they have rushed for profit into Balaam’s error; they have been destroyed in Korah’s rebellion. who loved gain from wrongdoing 2 Peter 2:15 (ESV) 15 Forsaking the right way, they have gone astray. They have followed the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved gain from wrongdoing…”
28
1 Timothy 6:10 ( NASB 95) For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. lovers of money…” 2 Timothy 3:1–5 (NIV84) But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money…”
29
Matthew 6:19-24 ( NLT ) You cannot serve both God and money. 19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven… 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also…“No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
30
Luke 12:20–21 ( NASB 95) 20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your soul is required of you; and now who will own what you have prepared?’ 21 “So is the man who stores up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”
31
31:9-16 They are the ones who caused the plague to strike YaHWeH’s people. 9 Then the Israelite army captured the Midianite women and children and seized their cattle and flocks and all their wealth as plunder… 14 But Moses was furious with all the generals and captains who had returned from the battle. 15 “Why have you let all the women live?” he demanded. 16 “These are the very ones who followed Balaam’s advice and caused the people of Israel to rebel against YaHWeH at Mount Peor. They are the ones who caused the plague to strike YaHWeH’s people.
32
You must purify yourselves…Purify all your clothing…Anything made of gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin, or lead—that is, all metals that do not burn—must be passed through fire in order to be made ceremonially pure.” (31:19-23) Romans 12:1–2 (ESV) 1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.
33
31:25-28 25 And YaHWeH said to Moses, 26 “You and Eleazar the priest and the family leaders of each tribe are to make a list of all the plunder taken in the battle, including the people and animals. 27 Then divide the plunder into two parts, and give half to the men who fought the battle and half to the rest of the people. 28 From the army’s portion, first give YaHWeH His share of the plunder—one of every 500 of the prisoners and of the cattle, donkeys, sheep, and goats.
34
31:48-50 48 Then all the generals and captains came to Moses 49 and said, “We, your servants, have accounted for all the men who went out to battle under our command; not one of us is missing! 50 So we are presenting the items of gold we captured as an offering to YaHWeH from our share of the plunder—armbands, bracelets, rings, earrings, and necklaces. This will purify our lives before YaHWeH and make us right with Him.”
35
2 Corinthians 9:7 ( NLT ) You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.” “What’s the world coming to Cratchit? You spend all your life making money and they want you to give it away?”
36
Deuteronomy 23:3–5 ( NASB 95) “No Ammonite or Moabite shall enter the assembly of YaHWeH; none of their descendants, even to the tenth generation, shall ever enter the assembly of YaHWeH, and because they hired against you Balaam the son of Beor from Pethor of Mesopotamia, to curse you. 3 “No Ammonite or Moabite shall enter the assembly of YaHWeH; none of their descendants, even to the tenth generation, shall ever enter the assembly of YaHWeH, 4 because they did not meet you with food and water on the way when you came out of Egypt, and because they hired against you Balaam the son of Beor from Pethor of Mesopotamia, to curse you. 5 “Nevertheless, YaHWeH your God was not willing to listen to Balaam, but YaHWeH your God turned the curse into a blessing for you because YaHWeH your God loves you.
37
Nehemiah 13:1–2 ( NASB 95) and there was found written in it that no Ammonite or Moabite should ever enter the assembly of God 1 On that day they read aloud from the book of Moses in the hearing of the people; and there was found written in it that no Ammonite or Moabite should ever enter the assembly of God, 2 because they did not meet the sons of Israel with bread and water, but hired Balaam against them to curse them. However, our God turned the curse into a blessing.
38
26:1-2 1 After the plague had ended, YaHWeH said to Moses and to Eleazar son of Aaron the priest, 2 “From the whole community of Israel, record the names of all the warriors by their families. List all the men twenty years old or older who are able to go to war.”
39
Vs. 5 – 11 The Sons of Reuben This Dathan and Abiram are the same community leaders who conspired with Korah against Moses and Aaron, rebelling against YaHWeH. 10 But the earth opened up its mouth and swallowed them with Korah, and fire devoured 250 of their followers. This served as a warning to the entire nation of Israel. 11 However, the sons of Korah did not die that day.
40
26:14 14 These were the clans of Simeon. Their registered troops numbered 22,200. Numbers 1:22–23 (NLT) Simeon 59,300. Genesis 49:7 (NLT) Genesis 49:7 (NLT) A curse on their anger, for it is fierce; a curse on their wrath, for it is cruel. I will scatter them among the descendants of Jacob; I will disperse them throughout Israel.
41
26:51 “ In summary, the registered troops of all Israel numbered 601,730.”
42
26:52-55 But you must assign the land by lot 52 Then YaHWeH said to Moses, 53 “Divide the land among the tribes, and distribute the grants of land in proportion to the tribes’ populations, as indicated by the number of names on the list. 54 Give the larger tribes more land and the smaller tribes less land, each group receiving a grant in proportion to the size of its population. 55 But you must assign the land by lot, and give land to each ancestral tribe according to the number of names on the list.
43
Proverbs 16:33 ( NASB 95) “ The lot is cast into the lap, But its every decision is from YaHWeH.”
44
26:63-65 Not one person on this list had been among those listed in the previous registration taken by Moses and Aaron in the wilderness of Sinai. Not one of them survived except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun. 63 So these are the results of the registration of the people of Israel as conducted by Moses and Eleazar the priest on the plains of Moab beside the Jordan River, across from Jericho. 64 Not one person on this list had been among those listed in the previous registration taken by Moses and Aaron in the wilderness of Sinai. 65 For YaHWeH had said of them, “They will all die in the wilderness.” Not one of them survived except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
