Define the term implied main idea. 1 1  What is the topic, or subject, of the paragraph?  What are the major supporting details?  Based on the details about the topic, what point or main idea is the author trying to get across? An effective reader asks:

Determine an implied main idea of a passage based on the topic, supporting details, and thought patterns... 5 Find the topic:  The topic must cover all details without being too broad or narrow. Study the details:  The author’s thought pattern will help point out major details. Determine the author’s controlling point:  Look for author’s opinion or bias. Read the Clues 3 3

Gorillas are another example of a species that may face the threat of extinction soon. Determine the topic:  Study the details and look for repetition.  Remember: A topic is a general subject that includes all of the details. Analyze the supporting details to identify the topic of a passage. 2 2 Topic = extinction of species

(Follow the same procedure to create a thesis statement that states the implied central idea.) Create a thesis statement that states the implied central idea of a passage. 6 6  Circle the topic.  Underline signal words.  Look for transition words paired with supporting details (one reason, a second cause, the final effect) and use these in your one-sentence summary. For example: “Several effects are...” Effective Strategy: Annotate the Text
