#SQLSAT454 Power BI Bringing Business Intelligence closer to users

#SQLSAT454 Power BI  Power BI and its components have always focused squarely on both personal and team BI solutions

#SQLSAT454 Power BI … vs SQL Server vs SQL Server  Power Query…SSIS  Power Pivot…SSAS  Power View…SSRS  Power BI Desktop… SSIS / SSAS / SSRS  Self Service BI vs the Enterprise Data Warehouse

#SQLSAT454 Power BI … History Power Pivot for Excel 2010 (SQL 2008 R2) Power View (released with SQL 2012) Added to Excel with Excel 2013 Power Query (2013) Power Map (2013) Power BI for Office 365 (2013) Requires SharePoint Online (office 365) Power BI mobile app (2014) New Power BI site

#SQLSAT454 Power BI … Self-Service BI  Empowering end users with reporting and analysis tools  Point and click interfaces  Query Languages with short learning curves  Less dependency on IT to get access to Data

#SQLSAT454 Power BI … and the EDW  Power BI is NOT a replacement for an Enterprise Data Warehouse Scale Centralized Reporting (single source of truth) Data Integrity Source Control

#SQLSAT454 Power BI … and the EDW  Power BI is a GREAT compliment to an Enterprise Data Warehouse Powerful, analyst friendly reporting Quick data mash-up (Wrangling data before Formal Enterprise Data Warehouse)

#SQLSAT454 Azure SQL DataWarehouse

#SQLSAT454 But…  What about collaboration?  What about Groups, Sharing, Coauthoring and Content Packs?

#SQLSAT454 Group collaboration may have been one of the features that we all needed the most and it is here

#SQLSAT454 HOW TO USE THE SHARING ABILITIES?

#SQLSAT454 Just something…  A lot of collaboration features  A lot of confusion with respect to all these new features  We explain  How they work  Some best practices might be moving forward

#SQLSAT454 Collaboration features released with GA of PowerBI 2.0 on July 24th 2015

#SQLSAT454 3C Collaborate Communicate Connect With your data

#SQLSAT454 Datasets, Reports and Dashboards  Three basic types of content in Power BI  Datasets: reporting models  attributes and measures  Reports: collections of PAGES  Dashboards: tiles pinned from Reports

#SQLSAT454 Where do we store contents?  Two options  My Workspace  Groups  When you log in for the first time, you may not see any groups  Name, ID, Privacy, Members

#SQLSAT454 Groups are only available with Power BI Pro

#SQLSAT454 Groups  Creating a group creates an Office 365 group with all of the collaboration artifacts (OneDrive, mailbox, etc.)

#SQLSAT454 Groups  Power BI groups offer a powerful collaborative experience built on Office 365 groups  Collaboration doesn’t end with Power BI  sharing files on OneDrive for Business,  conversations in Exchange,  calendar,  tasks,  …

#SQLSAT454 Groups Power BIOffice 365 Add or remove group membersAdd or remove members, including making a member an admin Edit the group nameEdit the group name and description Delete the groupSee the group email address

#SQLSAT454 Groups Tips & Tricks  Any user can create a group  Only the administrator can delete one in Office 365 Portal  Don’t create a group unless you are sure you need one

#SQLSAT454 Groups Tips & Tricks  You can only be in the “My Workspace” area OR in a single group workspace at a time  There is no way to move content between groups and/or your personal workspace.  There is no concept of Folders at the time of this writing

#SQLSAT454 Groups & Permissions  When you are in a group workspace:  every member of the group can make changes to group content (datasets, reports, dashboards)  Readonly group  in roadmap  Content stored in your personal workspace can only be edited by you

#SQLSAT454 Governance  Content that does not require much collaboration and governance can be stored in your personal workspace Need governance? Large number of Users? Group Workspace

#SQLSAT454 Storage  Personal workspace is limited to 10GB  Pro version  So is each group…  Every new group gets another 10GB of storage

#SQLSAT454 Sharing  For dashboard in your personal workspace: you can use a Share Dashboard feature

#SQLSAT454 Sharing Tips & Tricks  Only users within your organizations are allowed to have access to your dashboard  The recipients will get an email with a link that they will have to click on to accept the share  Share Dashboard option is not available for dashboards created in Group workspaces  Only dashboards can be shared (reports and datasets cannot).  A better way to share content is by creating an organizational content pack

#SQLSAT454 Organizational Content Pack  Do you have any reports that you regularly distribute via email to your team?  Package up and share your own dashboard, reports, and datasets with your coworkers  All in one location: the content pack library

#SQLSAT454 Organizational Content Pack  You can create an organizational content pack by clicking the gear icon on the top right hand corner of the page  who has access, title, description

#SQLSAT454 Organizational Content Pack  You can specify:  Dashboards + Reports + Datasets,  Reports + Datasets  Datasets  Click Publish button to complete creation

#SQLSAT454 Organizational Content Pack  After the content pack has been published, users with required access will have an option to consume it by clicking on  Get Data  Get

#SQLSAT454 Organizational Content Pack  … then selecting content pack from the list

#SQLSAT454 Organizational Content Pack  After the content pack has been published:  you and the group members can continue working on the content pack  those changes will not be propagated to the end users automatically  to push the updated content to end users you need to click on View Content Pack option

#SQLSAT454 Organizational Content Pack … then click on Update button again

#SQLSAT454 Evaluations  Don’t forget to compile evaluations form here  http://speakerscore.com/sqlsat454 http://speakerscore.com/sqlsat454
