Mitosis Divide and conquer

How do cells multiply? Cell cycle – process where: DNA contained in chromosomes duplicates Parent cell divides each new cell is called a daughter cell 3 phases: interphase mitosis cytokinesis

What is interphase? interphase is a: period of cell growth in size and organelles double (G1 phase) DNA replication (S phase) continues growth and all structures and proteins for mitosis form (G2)

What is mitosis? mitosis – nucleus divides into 2 nuclei each nucleus has complete set of chromosomes makes up most of M phase (cytokinesis makes up the rest) 4 phases (but is continuous) prophase metaphase anaphase telophase

What happens in prophase? prophase – chromatin condenses into visible chromosomes sister chromatids attached via centromeres nuclear membrane breaks down centrioles travel to opposite ends of cells spindle fibers forms between centrioles

What happens in metaphase? Sister chromatids line up in the center along spindle fibers attached at the centromere

What happens in anaphase? Sister chromatids are pulled apart at their centromeres by spindle fibers each chromatid is an exact duplicate of its parent copy

What happens in telophase? chromosomes reach opposite poles and uncoil spindle breaks down nuclear membrane reforms beginnings of division of cytoplasm and organelles

What happens in cytokinesis? cytokinesis is division of cytoplasm and organelles into 2 separate cells in animals cleavage furrow forms and splits two cells in plants the cell plate forms between nuclei

How is mitosis used? A form of asexual reproduction yeasts and hydras do this by producing a smaller version of the organism on their sides, called? replaces old or damaged cells enables growth in size of organism
