Curve Crash Analysis March 2012 3/20121

Information Gathering PE Services Name Segment Description Radius Length Shapefiles Chevrons (based on county input) Analysts ADT Crashes Intersection on curve Visual trap Shoulder Type/Width (as part of segment data gathering) Chevrons (when using video log) Curve Warning and/or Speed Advisory Signs (when using video log) 3/20122

Naming Convention Each curves needs a unique identifier 003A 003 – CSAH 3 A – First curve on this segment Curves need to be tied back to Corridor IDs Leave curves in the Comprehensive Lists (sent to county); REMOVE curves on gravel roads for selecting projects 3/20123

Gravel and Urban Curves -Do not collect data for urban or gravel road curves. -During the “hot spot” review, be aware if there are any curves with multiple severe crashes. 3/20124

Crash Selection Years: 2007-2011 Unselect crashes with roadway character: 01, 02, 03, 04 – ‘straight’ crashes Use rectangle selector to select crashes in curve or close proximity 3/20125

Intersection on Curve? Yes/No Yes – intersection within the PC and PT Intersection of any roadway jurisdiction 3/20126

Visual Trap Yes/No Yes – road/tree line/utility line extend on either mainline tangent 3/20127

Shoulder Type/Width Spreadsheet is linked to pull in shoulder type/width from segment information Shoulder Type/Width information also carries through to the project form Type/Width information is referenced from Corridor tab and should be manually overridden on Curve tab i.e. a County may have paved shoulders only thru curves 3/20128 SOMETHING THAT HAS CHANGED IS THAT WE ARE RECORDING SHOULDER WIDTH/TYPE BY INSIDE AND OUTSIDE NOW.

Curve Warning and/or Speed Advisory Signs Record advance curve warning signs (Curve Advisory, Turn Advisory, Reverse Curve, Reverse Turn, Winding Road) and advisory speed (if posted). For Winding Road advisory signs, try to record which curves appear to be covered by the sign Collect data using video log. 6/20119
