1 Breaking the Bank “Gas or Hybrid” By: Jennifer Flores Erika Castillo Katelyn Edington Jessica Ramirez

2 Driving question Breaking the bank, gas or hybrid? What is a hybrid? ▫“Hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs) combine the benefits of gasoline engines and electric motors and can be configured to obtain different objectives, such as improved fuel economy, increased power, or additional auxiliary power for electronic devices and power tools.”(www.fueleconomy.com)

3 Our task Create ̴ A presentation that will persuade others on which type of car is most cost efficient Find ̴ The fuel efficiency (mpg) for both cars Find ̴ The number of gallons used annually by both cars. Find ̴ The annual gas cost for both vehicles Create ̴ A table showing the annual gas cost for each vehicle for 10 years Write ̴ An equation for y, the total cost of operating a vehicle for 10 years Include ̴ A graph on the coordinate plane that compares the total cost in years Graph ̴ Both equation on the same coordinate plane Estimate ̴ When the two vehicles will cost the same on the graph Explain ̴ Which car you would chose and why. *all of our calculations are based on the same gas price of $2.65 per gallon

11 What we chose When purchasing a car, of course you want the better deal. As you may know gas prices aren’t that cheap. That is how a hybrid car can solve your problems. For the PBL known as “Break the Bank, Gas or Hybrid” we were asked to find information about a certain car and try to distinguish whether hybrids or gas cars are better. I chose the 2015 Honda Accord Hybrid. Hybrid cars may be more expensive but they have a lot of advantages. First off you don’t have to spend that much money on gas. Another thing is that it has higher fuel efficiency, this allows the gas to last longer. Overall hybrids are far more efficient than gas cars. To start off they have longer lasting fuel efficiencies which mean that a tank of gas in a hybrid can take you farther than a gas car’s tank. This also means that the money spent on gas can decrease and be used for other personal uses. When we compared the same model car as a hybrid and gas car, the change was very clear in all 3 of our cases
