3 Confucianism Confucianism is a system of behaviors and ethics that is built around one persons obligation to another based upon their relationship. Affiliated with your status. The different relationships consist of: 1) ruler and subject, 2) husband and wife, 3) parents and children, 4)brothers and sisters and 5) friend and friend Confucianism stresses duty, loyalty, honor, filial piety, respect for age and seniority, and sincerity. 4 Kibun Kibun is described as a state of mind or feelings. Individuals must show respect and maintain a social harmony. If you hurt someone’s kibun you are hurting their pride or causing them to lose dignity. In a business atmosphere you must respect authority and maintain kibun. Nunchi is body language, eye contact, and verbal tone that can predict the kibun of a person.

5 Traditions Family is very important in this culture. Family welfare triumphs individual wellbeing. One family member’s actions reflect on the whole family. The oldest male child has the most responsibility and it then on to the next son.

6 Etiquette Hand shakes may follow after a bow A person bows to anyone of higher status or elders Senior initiates the handshake Wait to be introduced Greet individually When saying “good-bye” speak and bow to each person individually Gifts are greatly appreciated and reciprocated as well It is inconsiderate to give a gift that is too expensive to be reciprocated Fruit, chocolate, or flowers are to be brought when visiting someone’s home 4 is consider to unlucky and 7 lucky so give in this increment Do not wrap gifts in green, white, or black Do not write in red ink Use both hands when giving a gift Gifts are not opened when received Remove shoes before entering a house Will not be offensive to arrive 30 minutes late Must wait to be seated for a meal Oldest person served first Senior or oldest person will start eating process Never point chopsticks Must return chopsticks to table every few bites or when a drink is taken Do not cross chopsticks Do not use hands Try everything and it is rude to ask what something is Do not accept offers of seconds the first time Clean the plate Never put chopsticks to rest in a parallel position when finished Chopsticks at rest shows that a person is done eating

7 Education Education is highly regarded 6 years of primary school 3 years of middle school 3 years of high school Parents spend around $80,000 a year on after school tuition 93% of students graduate high school

8 History 1950-1953 war with North Korea 1947 Samsung created and developed cosmetics which later turned into electronics Hyundai built ships and exporting started 1980 the country went bankrupt Citizens donated gold to get economy back up DMZ separates the 2 countries DMZ has highly regulated and secured 2009 the country was 9 th largest in exporting, 5 th largest in automotives, 2 nd largest in mobile devices, 1 st largest in ship building, and 10 th largest in metro
