How Do You Use Your Brain? Left- and Right-Brained Learning Styles

Are You Creative or Analytical? Our brain has two halves – the right and the left. People using left part of the brain are usually logical and analytical. While those who use the right half of the brain are creative, innovative and imaginative. Do you think you are right or left brained?

Try this! Read aloud, as quickly as possible, the colour in which the words are written but not the actual words. GREEN YELLOW BLUE ORANGE WHITE RED GREEN BLUE ORANGE YELLOW WHITE GREEN RED BLUE WHITE GREEN ORANGE YELLOW ORANGE BLUE GREEN RED WHITE YELLOW RED BLUE YELLOW ORANGE RED WHITE BROWN WHITE

If you merely read the words, you are likely to be using right brain. Whereas, if you read the colours, you are using your left brain.

Left-Brain VS Right-Brain Functions uses logic detail oriented facts rule words and language present and past math and science can comprehend knowing acknowledges order/pattern perception knows object name reality based forms strategies practical safe uses feeling "big picture" oriented imagination rules symbols and images present and future philosophy & religion can "get it" (i.e. meaning) Believes Appreciates spatial perception knows object function fantasy based presents possibilities Impetuous risk taking Left-BrainRight-Brain

Knowing which side is dominant helps you understand your… Personality Learning Style Task Development And a host of other things!

Some Quick Facts Our education system conditions us to be left-brained. What does this mean??????? By the age of 7 only 10 percent of children will rank as highly creative. Research shows that we tend to be more right-brained in our early childhood. It has been said that the more educated you are the less likely you are to think strategically. Some of the world’s greatest entrepreneurs like Bill Gates, Michael Dell and Richard Branson were school dropouts with no business degrees! Yet they have proven to be some of our greatest strategists and visionaries…

Types Of Learners

Visual Learners  have a preference for seeing  think in pictures; visual aids such as overhead slides, diagrams, handouts, etc.

Visual Learner

Auditory Learners  best learn through listening  lectures, discussions, tapes, etc.

Auditory Learner

Kinesthetic Learners  prefer to learn via experience moving, touching, and doing  active exploration of the world; science projects; experiments, etc.

Kinesthetic Learner

Study Tips for the Visual Learner Draw a map of events in history or draw scientific process. Make outlines of everything! Copy what’s on the board. Take notes, make lists. Watch videos. Color code words, research notes. Use flashcards. Use highlighters, circle words, underline. Replace words with symbols that stand for the words. Make a mind map outline of your notes. Turn words into charts and diagrams, and then back to words again.

Study Tips for the Auditory Learner Using word association to remember facts and lines. Recording lectures. Watching videos. Repeating facts with eyes closed. Participating in group discussions. Using audiotapes for language practice. Put your notes on tape and listen to them. Read your notes aloud. Explain the topic to someone. Get a study buddy to explain one more time.

Study Tips for the Kinesthetic Learner Studying in short blocks. Taking lab classes. Role playing. Taking field trips, visiting museums. Studying with others. Remember any field trips, experiments, or role plays that you did during the unit. Put lots of real examples into your notes. Write out your study notes or an abbreviated version of them. Walk as you review information.

Activity Take the 4 quizzes at mme- biega.wikispaces.com under “Interesting Links” and record your results to each quiz. Answer the following questions and put your responses and results in your portfolio: Are you left-brained or right-brained? How do you know? Are you a visual, auditory, or kinesthetic learner? How do you know? Give me five study tips you can use as this type of learner to increase your learning. Were these results surprising? Why or why not?
