SCI-MA-TECH A Program of Educational Excellence

The main purpose of SCI-MA-TECH is to increase interest and promote excellence in science, math, engineering and technology. SCI-MA-TECH helps prepare high school students to be more competitive in post-secondary education. Objectives

Description SCI-MA-TECH is located at Traverse City Central High School SCI-MA-TECH classes take place during 1 st and 2 nd period Students begin SCI-MA-TECH as a freshman There are 25-33 students per grade Three SMT credits are earned yearly

SCI-MA-TECH Features A challenging, individualized, and integrated curriculum. Authentic scientific research projects Advanced Placement courses Extensive college preparations, including site visits Exposure to guest speakers from universities, government, business, and industry A 50 hour internship

Freshmen Curriculum Honors Biology Accelerated Geometry Technology – Measurement and Instrumentation and Introduction to Scientific Research Northern Michigan Mathematics, Engineering, & Science Symposium

Sophomore Curriculum Honors Chemistry Accelerated Algebra II Technology – Computer Aided Drafting and Design/Web Design/Databases and Advanced Scientific Research Northern Michigan Mathematics, Engineering, & Science Symposium

Junior Curriculum Honors Physics Trigonometry/ Pre-Calculus Technology – Advanced CADD/3-D Modeling and Simulation and Basic Programming/ Robotics Summer Internship

Senior Curriculum Advanced Placement Statistics or Advanced Placement Calculus (AB or BC) Advanced Placement Biology or Advanced Placement Chemistry Senior Project

Expectations Strong interest in and commitment to math, science, and technology Four-year commitment Summer internship between 11 th and 12 th grade including a paper and presentation Participation in science symposiums Participation in SMT field trips, college visits and extracurricular activities

Research Introduction to how research is conducted Understanding the use of technology to collect data for research Three guided mini-research projects Selection and research of approved independent project Report results of independent research in written form and through the use of technology Northern Michigan Mathematics, Engineering and Science Symposium Possible publication in student science journals

SCI-MA-TECH Provides Use of advanced measurement and multi-media technology Emphasis on teamwork and communication skills Exposure to experts in their chosen fields Greater opportunities for college acceptance and scholarships Field trips around the state to universities and businesses

Opportunity to perform experiments and conduct research independently with staff and alongside professionals and experts Mentoring and research opportunities leading to possible publication in a noted scientific journal Opportunity to participate in math and science competitions Opportunity to participate in special extracurricular opportunities “School within a school”, personalized attention from staff, same students in SMT classes

FIRST Team #1711 Six week time period to build a robot given a kit of parts Work in partnership with local engineers Compete in regional tournaments with and against other robots $12 million in scholarships available to FIRST participants Raptors

Funding Traverse City Area Public Schools will provide classroom lab, supplies and instructional staff Grants and contributions fund director position, speaker honorariums, professional development, academic competitions, field trip costs, and laboratory enhancements. Funds are maintained by Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation

Signing Up Competitive application process Not based solely on academic achievement Interest and commitment are MAJOR consideration factors Completion of SCI-MA-TECH application Three teacher recommendations Personal interview with selection committee Applications available, due March 27
