5 2. The school dropout problematic As of 2007, 4 in 10 Portuguese youngsters (10 – 15 years) don´t finish the mandatory 9 year scholar period. And only half of the 20 – 24 year old population had a secondary education. In the North Region of Portugal, the referred numbers are even worse and coupled to other social exclusion phenomena: poverty, unemployment, juvenile delinquency, etc.

Aims Aims: School Dropout Further Education/ Employment Create/gather conditions to personal development and reversion of predicted social exclusion pathways Intervention/resolution of youngsters' significant problems (to promote life changes): family, health, economic situation, accommodation, drug consumption, legal problems, job, education. How? Through the school’s educational principles and practices, professionals’ support and partnerships. Matosinho’s Second Chance School

Curricula Erasmus Intensive Program: Second Change School, Oporto, Portugal 5.1 Project´s Relevance - Alternative, oriented and guided training according to individual’s needs Workshops: - Music, Theater and Movement; - Computing – software and hardware; - Webdesign and Multimedia; - Art and Wood, Ceramics and Metal’s Techonology; - Kitchen, Hospitality and Tourism; - Textile and Clothing; - Personnal and Community Services - Young people’s integration into the labor market - Training support on literacy and numeracy

Methodology Erasmus Intensive Program: Second Change School, Oporto, Portugal Naturalistic Observation: visits to the school ground, where we had the opportunity to attend workshops and to informal talk to teachers, school staff and students. Obstacles: our restricted schedule, difficulties to interact, student’ absence.

Reports by the Students Erasmus Intensive Program: Second Change School, Oporto, Portugal Why did you come to the 2nd Chance School? - Professional qualifications and certification. -Less restricting schedules. - Less restriction of movements. Why did you leave your previous school? - Distancing from teachers. Do you get along with your classmates? -Fine relationships, but scarce. What do you expect to get from the 2nd Chance School? -Professional internships. -A different setting.
