12 Why do we need infection prevention and control education? Criterion 10 The principles and practice of prevention and control of infection are included in the induction and training programmes for all new staff. There is appropriate ongoing education for existing staff. There is a record of training and updates for all staff.

13 Why do you need to audit? Health and Social Care Act 2008 (2010) criterion 1 identifies that the registered provider will need to demonstrate that they have; “Systems in place to manage and monitor the prevention and control of infection, using risk assessments and consider how susceptible service users are and any risks that their environment and other users may pose to them” Need to have a infection control programme in place Need to produce an annual statement

We all have a responsibility under health and safety legislation to maintain safe working environment. Health care workers need to assess the potential risks associated with particular activities in order to identify what PPE is required. Employers have a responsibility to ensure the adequate provision of protective clothing for safe working practices ( Health and Safety Executive 1992)

(20,75,79) Guidance: Check they are readily available Are gloves stored appropriately? 26 Decontamination - The 3 stages CLEANING – The physical removal of accumulated deposits by washing with a cleaning solution (detergent & warm water) followed by adequate cleaning DISINFECTION – A process used to reduce the number of living micro-organisms. Disinfection must only take place following adequate cleaning STERILISATION – A process used to remove living micro-organisms including bacterial spores and viruses.
