1 Today We Will… Review uses of modal verbs Express certainty and uncertainty using modals Build vocabulary for Unit 2 theme: Whodunit? Learn to use “stress” in pronunciation of nouns and verbs

2 Guess the Place or Situation Read the directions and example on the worksheet. With a partner: –Write 5 sentences using modal verbs to describe the place or situation on your index card –Don’t make your sentences too easy to guess –Try not to use words that relate to the place –You will present your sentences to the class –The class will try to guess

3 We can use modals when we: Make guesses/predictions John is late. He may be in traffic. The teacher is angry. We might have failed the test. Make suggestions It is raining outside. You should wear a raincoat. I am going to Manhattan. You could go to Central Park. Give reasons for advice Don’t steal. You might go to jail.

4 Review Homework: Workbook page 11, Practice 6 Read the 5 examples in your homework. How are modals used in each example? It looks like rain. If you don’t take an umbrella, you may get wet. (make a prediction) Or It looks like rain. If you don’t take an umbrella, you should wear a raincoat. (……)

5 Some Warnings and Exceptions MIGHT and MAY: are very similar in meaning CAN and COULD: –Use the modal can to make general statements about what is possible You can easily lose your way in the dark. (= People often lose their way in the dark) –Use could to show that something is possible in the future, but not certain If we don’t hurry we could be late. (=Perhaps/Maybe we will be late) MUST can have meaning other than certainty, probability, and possibility Example: –The son must be the murderer. (possibility) –The son must do the dishes. (obligation)

6 Mystery Directions: Using your word maps, brainstorm all the different words and phrases you connect to the word: mystery You can mention TV shows, ideas, examples, books….

8 What happened? To show the degree of certainty you have about a topic, you can use certain words and expressions. Read the expressions on you worksheet. Use modal words, your new vocabulary, and the expressions to discuss what you think happened in the pictures on the next slide. Write at least 4 sentences.

10 Murder Mystery Game Everyone will be a character in this game One of you will be the murderer… Read the Background Information on the worksheet.

11 The Characters Read your character card. Memorize the information. The aim is to act out the game, become the character and not to just read the information from the card. Collect information about everyone who was at the party and fill any important information on the worksheet. Vocabulary: suspect, alibi, motive, clue

12 Task: 1. Walk around the room. 2. Ask questions and write in the information on the worksheet. 3. After you have spoken to everyone who was at the party, go back to your seat. 4. Using the information you have collected, try to work out who killed Ms. McGowan and why they did it.

13 Questions to ask characters: What is your name? Why were you at the party? What was your relationship with Ms. McGowan? ….

14 Solution: Mr. Green is Saul Sheen's father; he and Miss McGowan had a relationship in college. Miss McGowan has always kept it a secret but after the last argument with Saul she plans to tell him the truth. She tells Mr. Green about her plan and they argue. Louise King overhears them. Mr. Green is furious and it is he who follows Miss McGowan to the classroom and hits her over the head. He wasn't in his office when everyone heard the scream, that's why when Saul Sheen knocked on the door he got no answer.
