THE RESEARCH SAYS… “Children who fall behind in first grade reading have a one in eight chance of ever catching up to grade level.” (Juel, 1994) “Phoneme awareness is the single best predictor of reading success between kindergarten and second grade.” (Adams, Stanovich, 1995) “Phonemic awareness is more highly related to learning to read than are tests of general intelligence, reading readiness, and listening comprehension.” (Stanovich, 1993) Research says that 95% of all children proficient on NWF at mid 1 st grade will pass the 3 rd grade EOG test.

Part 2 Progress Monitoring

Reading 3D  Progress Monitoring – a tool not just a check off piece  It is a check on the teacher and the activities you are doing to build skills for each student

Go to your mCLASS app *Click on Reading 3D *Sort (if you would like to) *Click on a student’s name *”Progress Monitoring” *Drop Down Box – choose skill to assess *Assess (Choose the option to PM out of grade level if needed) *Then proceed to read Mr. Say and complete the assessment – same as Benchmark, except: DORF – you only have to do ONE passage

PM – TRC & DORF exceptions DORF – only one passage TRC – you are only required to listen to about 150-200 words (depending on grade level). Student can finish the story silently (if you think he/she can) *Might want to have them complete written questions first if you are trying to PM more than one child that day *Once you tap the “Oral Question” button, it will not let you assess another child until you are completely finished with this one

Progress Monitoring and Written Questions Level F and above Better alignment with benchmarks Replace questions 2 & 4 Questions 1 & 3 ask orally and score Score written questions and enter the score for numbers 2 & 4. Rubric for written questions = 1, 2, 3, 4…convert to score for oral questions: Written score Oral Score 0 convert to: 1 1 2 2 3 3 4

Hierarchy of Skills FSF, PSF, NWF, DORF Master each skill in order Don’t forget to do activities and PM on the skill of lowest score (even if it is no longer benchmarked within your grade level TRC – ultimate goal … COMPREHENSION

iPad time *Go to Web Reports *mCLASS Reading 3D box *Classroom summary *BOY *Rank students *Click arrow beside skill name *Now What tools *Small Group Advisor *Click on “notebook” to see suggested activities

FCRR  Common Core standards NC Read to Achieve Livebinder  Livebinder Livebinder

Look at your class What needs do you see in your class?  Do you have students who have not mastered PSF or NWF? – which skill is needed by different groups within your class? Make a list of students in need of activities per assessment (PSF, NWF, DORF)
