1 The Human Genome Project By John and Tish

2 What is the Human Genome Project?  The Human Genome Project was a 13 year long international project from 1990 to2003 with the aim of mapping out the entire ‘human genome’.  What did it discover?  20,500 genes in the human genome, 3 billion mononucleotides  “It's a history book - a narrative of the journey of our species through time. It's a shop manual, with an incredibly detailed blueprint for building every human cell.”  Funding:  It was funded publicly costing over $3 billion dollars. 3 How is DNA sequenced?

4 New Disciplines within the field of applied genetics  1. Bioinformatics: is the field based on using computers and digital analytic techniques to store and asses the colossal amount of data – an example of a key area in this field is the discovery of comparable gene sequences in different organisms.  2. Pharmacogenomics: is the branch of genetics concerned with determining the likely response of an individual to therapeutic drugs, based on their genetic make up.  1. 5 Impacts of HGP on drug development  Bioinformatics and pharmacogenomics are allowing us to understand diseases on a molecular level – and with this a new wave of molecular medicine is being created.  RNA interference technology  Stenosis  Genetic Distinguishing technology  Cancer cells – colon cancer  Bioinformatics and pharmacogenomics are allowing us to understand diseases on a molecular level – and with this a new wave of molecular medicine is being created.  RNA interference technology  Stenosis  Genetic Distinguishing technology  Cancer cells – colon cancer

6 Ethical, Social and Moral issues that have been raised  Who should have access to personal genetic information? How should such information be used?  Who owns and controls genetic information?  Will healthcare personnel counsel parents correctly and sympathetically about the risks and limitations arising from genetic technology?  Should parents have the right to let their children be tested for adult onset diseases? Should testing be performed in cases where no treatment is yet available?  Who should have access to personal genetic information?
