19 What is a Rubric? Rubrics can be analytic or holistic, and they can be created for any content area including math, science, history, writing, foreign languages, drama, art, music, etc. The rubric is a formative type of assessment because it becomes an ongoing part of the whole teaching and learning process. A rubric is a grading tool that lists a set of criteria, which defines and describes the important components of the work being planned or evaluated.

20 Rubrics can improve student performance, as well as monitor it, by making teachers' expectations clear and by showing students how to meet them. Rubrics help students become more thoughtful judges of the quality of their own and others' work. A rubric gives students clear targets of proficiency to aim for. Teachers can use it to assess projects, student groups, or individual students; students can use the same rubric for self-assessment as individuals, in groups, and for peer assessment; and parents can answer for themselves their questions about their child's performance. Why do we need rubrics?
