Macbeth Act V By: Rachel Choi, Angelica Dhall, Matt Finn, Jordan Whitfield _

Act V Scene I In scene I of act V we are introduced to a place in Dunsinane (Anteroom in the castle). At the scene the Doctor of physics and the waiting gentlewoman discuss the unusual habits of Lady Macbeth. When the doctor tells the Gentlewoman he has not seen any evidence that Lady Macbeth sleepwalks, lady Macbeth walks in (sleepwalking) with a light. As they observe her she consistently rubs her hands like she is washing them. She says "Out damned spot! Out I say One- two- why then tis time to do't. Hell is murky. Fie my Lord fie!... Yet who would have thought the old man to have had so much blood in him?" Lady Macbeth is expressing her guilt and she now knows that the blood stains will follow her wherever she goes no matter how many times she washes or cleans her hands. Although we may have a sense of knowing that she is replaying the night where Macbeth and herself killed Duncan, the doctor and the gentlewoman do not know of how the two planned to kill him that night. Therefore they see her as being "abnormal or ill".

Act V Scene II Outside the castle the Scottish leaders and lords discuss the military, while discussing, the English army approaches led by Malcolm. After they talk they come to the conclusion that they will come together and join forces at Birnam Woods. The most important thing to look at in this scene is the mention of Birnam Woods because the witches had once said previously in Act IV Scene I "Macbeth shall never be vanquished be until Great Birnam Wood to high Dunsinane Hill shall come against him". What the army is hoping to do is get rid of Macbeth, but before they do they decide to meet at Birnam Woods like the witches said.

Act V Scene III This scene takes place in the halls of the castle where Macbeth starts to feel so much pride for himself because nothing can get in his way. Even though the army is coming for him he says none and no one can get in the way since they are all "woman born", and according to the witches no man can hurt or rid of him if they are born from woman. Macbeth puts his armor on with confidence, thinking that he will remain undefeated. At the end of the scene the doctor comes in saying that he does not know what to do for the Queen. Macbeth tells the doctor to give her medicine or something that would rid of her illness.

Act V Scene IV Near Birnam Wood the Englishmen and Macduff talk about Macbeth's plan. The men come up with the idea that each soldier must cut down a part of the forest branch/ tree and present or carry it in front of them. While they march and carry the branches they think they will be able to disguise the number of soldiers and lords they have. Malcolm also mentions at the end "For there is advantage to be given Both more and less have given him the revolt, and none serve with him but constrained things whose hearts are absent too". What he is trying to say is every soldier with him had an opportunity to leave Macbeth's side. No one fights with him unless they are forced to and their hearts are not in it.

Act V Scene V While Macbeth is gloating about his success as being king thinking he would reign forever, he hears a woman's cry. In this scene Seyton comes towards the King and brings the bad news " The Queen is Dead ", after hearing this Macbeth grows numb. A little while one of his servants coming in with the news that the Birnam Woods is advancing towards Dunsinane. Hearing this Macbeth grows frightened.

Act V Scene VI In this scene Macduff says to draw their swords and prepare for a battle.

Act V Scene VII For Macbeth at this point he will kill and slay any man who get in his way. He rids of young siward and gains more confidence for he had gotten rid of a man born of a woman. While Siward and Malcolm enter the castle, Macduff goes looking for Macbeth.

Act V Scene VIII Macduff searches for Macbeth frantically. When they come face to face the kingdom becomes a battlefield. While fighting Macbeth proudly says he is invincible for Macduff is born of a woman and he told him of the witches predictions. Macduff then tells Macbeth that he was not born of a woman's womb but had a c- section done. After hearing this Macbeth grows fearful, but even to the very end he decides not to go down without a fight. At the end of the fight Macbeth gets slain. (his head cut off ) The other thanes and soldiers come walking in they notice that Macbeth is dead when Macduff walks in with his head in his hand. The thanes and soldiers and Macduff then hand the crown down to Malcolm and praise him.
