The interactive reading platform that enables teachers to leverage best practices to support, motivate, and engage students in deep learning. Actively Learn

Why I use Actively Learn I can promote active, thinking reading I can provide differentiated instruction and faster feedback For each student, I can see areas that need more work.

Actively Learn The interactive reading platform that enables teachers to leverage best practices to support, motivate, and engage students in deep learning.

Where Actively Learn stands apart There are many literacy practices that have shortcomings. On Actively Learn, their approach brings unique benefits to classrooms in the following ways.

Where Actively Learn stands apart Support Scaffolding Leveling X Shortcomings of Leveling: Leveling has a weak empirical basis, introduces reduced expectations, limits the types of texts teachers can assign, ignores what a student can accomplish with a teacher’s guidance, and loses sight of whether a text is worth reading in the first place. Benefits of Scaffolding: Students are supported through any text, regardless of text complexity, or content area. Teachers can directly support students individually, or as a group.

Motivation Social Interaction X Where Actively Learn stands apart Badges Shortcomings of Badges: Badges and other systems are often used to keep students motivated. These systems fall short if student’s don’t buy in. Benefits of Social Interaction: Meaningful conversations between students and the teacher help keep students motivated.

Shortcomings of Quizzing: Persistent diagnostic quizzes can leave students feeling frustrated. Engagement Active Reading Where Actively Learn stands apart Quizzing X Benefits of Active Reading: By annotating, discussing, viewing peers responses to questions, and leveraging reading aids help students become active thinkers when they read.

Teacher Involved Sideline X Where Actively Learn stands apart Shortcomings of sidelining teachers: On some reading programs there’s not much room for teacher involvement beyond looking at reports after students read. Benefits of involving teachers: Research shows that a great teacher is the single biggest factor that can improve student outcomes in a classroom. Teacher instruction and feedback is central in Actively Learn.

Where Actively Learn stands apart Literacy All Subjects Only English X Shortcomings of limiting literacy to ELA classes: Literacy is not only taught in English classes. A big part of becoming a better reader is reading diverse content, across all subject areas. Benefit of reading across all subjects: Actively Learn’s catalog & import tools make it quick and easy for teachers of any subject to teach literacy.
