Of all the requirements that God places upon His children, none may seem more “unattainable” than…

Our first thoughts of “holiness” take us to God Himself. Only He can possess such perfection.

When the LORD saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush, and said, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” Then God said, “Do not come near here; remove your sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” When the LORD saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush, and said, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” Then God said, “Do not come near here; remove your sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” Ex 3:4-5

I am the LORD, your Holy One, the Creator of Israel, your King. Isa 43:15

And the four living creatures, each one of them having six wings, are full of eyes around and within; and day and night they do not cease to say, “Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD God, the Almighty, who was and who is and who is to come.” Rev 4:8

Yet, this “holy” God expects His children to possess “holiness.”

Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.” 1 Pet 1:13-16

…that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness. Eph 4:22-24

“Holiness” is defined as… Undefiled by sin, free from wickedness; religiously observing every moral obligation; pure; piety towards God. – Thayer’s Lexicon Of N.T. Words, p. 456

How can Christians faithfully exhibit “holiness?” Perhaps one of the hymns we sing gives the answer.

More holiness give me, more strivings within, more patience in suffering, more sorrow for sin, more faith in my Savior, more sense of His care, more joy in His service, more purpose in prayer. “More Holiness Give Me” [Hymns For Worship, #352]

Thank you for joining us as we worship this “holy” God. We especially appreciate your attendance if you are visiting.

May God in all His holiness be praised & glorified by our worship. May we also be directed toward more “holy” living this coming week.
