1 Advanced Choice of Employment Scheme 2013 Training Year

2 ACE Overview Complete ACE application to apply for a first year House Officer position in NZ DHBs rank all applicants who ranked them in order of preference Applicants rank DHBs in order of preference ACE match using algorithm DHBs receive list of applicants who have been successfully matched to their DHB DHBs send an offer of employment to successful applicants

3 Eligibility All applicants eligible for first year house positions, and suitable to apply for registration with the New Zealand Medical Council

4 Eligibility DHB Ranking The DHBs will rank applicants in the following order until ALL applicants have been ranked: 1) Graduates from New Zealand medical schools and are citizens or permanent residents of New Zealand/Australia. 2) Graduates from Australian medical schools and are citizens or permanent residents of New Zealand/Australia 3) Applicants who have passed the NZRex clinical exam and are citizens or permanent residents of New Zealand/Australia or hold an unconditional work permit to work in New Zealand. 4) Graduates from New Zealand medical schools and are not permanent residents of New Zealand/Australia. 5) Applicants who have passed the NZRex clinical exam and are not permanent residents of New Zealand/Australia. 6) Graduates from Australian medical schools and are not permanent residents of New Zealand/Australia.

5 ACE Application ACE application form Certified copy of academic transcript Certified copy of residency document Three ACE referee report forms completed Curriculum vitae Cover letter(s) (Optional)

6 ACE application form Complete all sections! Changes can be made until the closing date – Monday 25 June 2012 – 5pm

7 Academic Transcript Post certified hard copy of the official academic transcript Must be certified by: o Justice of the Peace o Court Registrar o Lawyer Original transcripts accepted but not returned University of Auckland – Faculty Transcripts – sent to us by the faculty administration in May – you must send details of 4/5 year distinctions University of Otago – Faculty Transcripts – must be ordered by the student and then sent to ACE (original or certified)

8 Residency Document Post certified hard copy/copies of: o Photo page of NZ passport or o Photo page of an overseas passport accompanied by the relevant visa page or o New Zealand driver licence accompanied by birth certificate or citizenship certificate Must be certified by: o Justice of the Peace o Court Registrar o Lawyer Please do not send original documents

9 References Must be a Consultant GP/Consultant Specialist who has observed the applicant’s clinical work in a NZ health setting or in a comparable health setting (as defined by the Medical Council of New Zealand). Countries included can be found at the MCNZ website. There are 22 countries and include Canada, the UK, Hong Kong, Singapore and the USA. References must be obtained from placements completed in the past 2 years. Only one 5th year reference may be used. Must be completed using the 2012-2013 ACE referee form

10 Online References Email requests via the online application can only be sent once. Decide on a new referee or more than 3 will have to email them directly. Want to change one of the 3 referees listed on application when the reference has already been submitted or uploaded will need to email ACE Coordinator with the new referee’s details.

11 Curriculum vitae ACE CV template can be found on the ACE Healthcareers website. Your chance to ‘sell’ yourself Professional, positive and genuine Try to keep to 1~2 pages (excluding research & publications) Include employment history but make sure you explain any large gaps Avoid listing key skills/attributes No grammatical and spelling errors!

12 Cover Letters One page per DHB Professional and enthusiastic but not desperate Be yourself and avoid regular use of clichés Explain what skills you can bring to the job and the organisation – Do the research Show genuine interest by giving specific reasons to why you want to work for that DHB – Simply stating “I have ranked you as my first choice” is meaningless No grammatical and spelling errors!
