2 Intro Bellwork:  “As you probably already know, fashion styles come and go. “Just when I get used to something new and start to wear it,” one person said, “it’s out-of-date.” In contrast, many people love the quick fashion changes. They look forward to wearing something different and don’t mind spending money on the latest fashions. ” Clothing: Fashion, Fabrics & Construction”  What do you think? Do you like the pace of change in fashions, or would you like it to be slower? Why do you think people have different opinions on this questions?

3 What is Fashion??  Fashion: particular style that is popular at a given time.  Style: characteristics that distinguish one particular item of clothing from another.  Ex: Jeans are a specific style of pants.  Classics: certain styles stay in fashion for a long time.  Simple MUST TAKE NOTES & TURN IN WHEN FINISHED!

4 What is Fashion?? (Continue)  Fad: Very popular for only a short period of time.  Less expensive  Return when found by another generation  Avant-Garde: French expression that means ahead of fashion. Popular Fad in 1960’s Click box to the left.

5 Retro & Vintage  Retro-Styles of earlier time come back into fashion.  Vintage-Fashions from an earlier time. “Every generation laughs at the old fashions, but follows religiously the new.” -Henry David Thoreau

6 Fashion Cycles  Fashion Cycle: Introduction, Growth, Maturity, & eventually Decline  Intro Stage:  Seen first by models and celebrities  Small quantities made so priced higher  Growth Stage:  Eventually fashion is accepted  Sales increase, lowered prices  Maturity Stage  Many people wear this fashion  Made in large quantities-prices are affordable  Decline Stage  People get tired of it  Sales Decline  Shorter than Introduction Stage

9 Fashion Features  Read p 103-113  Neckline  Collar  Sleeve  Dress  Shirt  Skirt  Pants  Jackets and coats

10 Barbie Fashion Show (Option 1)  Your assignment:  Create or modify an (4) outfit for a Barbie doll using the clothes given to you, another group’s clothes or materials in class  Write a description for the outfit using terms from the PowerPoint (ex: fad) and the style feature used (neckline, sleeve style, etc)  A volunteer will walk Barbie down the runway and show-off garment details and the other will read the description  You will turn in your written description

11 Fashion Line Project (Option 2)  Design a line of clothing with a central theme or inspiration.  May be for any age or gender.  No lingerie or a copy of another designers work.  Project turned in should include:  Drawings  Narrations (what would be said while walking down the runway. Use descriptions from notes)  Ask Mrs. Shipley for complete scoring guide
