What is NNELS? NNELS is a downloadable e-reading service of alternative format materials available to public library patrons with a perceptual disability.

What is a perceptual disability? severe or total impairment of sight or the inability to focus or move one’s eyes; inability to hold or manipulate a book; reading impairment relating to comprehension.

Why are we able to do this? 32. (1) It is not an infringement of copyright for a person with a perceptual disability,... or for a non-profit organization acting for the benefit of such a person to (a) make a copy or sound recording of a literary … work, in a format specially designed for persons with a perceptual disability;

Who is part of the Network?

How Important is this service? This is a critical for the 3 Million Canadians who cannot read conventional print material and who want to be full citizens in their communities, their province and in Canada, and to fully participate in Manitoban and Canadian culture. 3,000,000

How do I sign up? Visit your local public library Self-Declare as having a perceptual disability Some libraries require paperwork to self declare; others do not.

How do I sign up?

1. Authenticate using library card NNELS uses SIP2 authentication to connect libraries with the system to provide access to those patrons who have self declared and have had their p-type changed.

2. Self-Declare with NNELS

What do I do? I work with closely with Content Coordinator, Cynthia Ng, and accessible format conversion specialists to make accessible copies of books.

… Alternative Format Production Texts are produced using two methods: Rare and out of print materials New or widely available texts.

Step 1: Remove spine and cover Step 2: Place in scanner Step 3: Scan! We then edit the converted text before producing e-text and DIASY books.

Available Formats Also available: DAISY 2/3 MP3 EPUB 2/3 BRF (e-Braille)

What if I need a different format? Email support@nnels.ca to request additional formatssupport@nnels.ca

How do I request a Title?

Do we produce quality work? “We produce many DAISY books each month, but we have never received feedback on the quality of our work [from a user]. And producing high quality DAISY books is a priority for me. When you get a chance, can you [the user] give me a quick sense of your impressions on the quality of the conversion: Were there many speech errors? Did you enjoy the image descriptions? Was the book well structured?”

Yes! … Phew! “Simply, it was top-notch! I would answer yes to every question you had, and I really couldn’t think of anything to criticize if I tried. Thank you so much for all the work you put into producing that book.”
