Hellgate High School MBI “In your seat, with materials, ready to go” Lesson Plan & Tardy Response

Overview On time = in seat, with materials, ready to go. On time or tardy with only two exceptions: Admit pass from another staff member. Admit pass from the attendance desk. Tardy = ANYTHING ELSE. 3 tardy-admits per class per quarter. Teachers are not responsible for excused or unexcused tardy. Attendance office will provide excused admit pass with parent contact. No pass required for admittance during 5 minute tardy period. No admittance to class, other than above two exceptions, after the tardy period. One universal building-wide response to tardy.

Tardy Period All classes; all days: 5 minutes. No pass required for entry during 5 minute tardy period. If you are later than the 5 minute tardy period, please go directly to the attendance office.

Administrative Response 4 th tardy = 1 detention 5 th tardy = 2 detentions 6 th tardy = 1 day ISS 7 th tardy = 2 day ISS plus parent phone or in-person conference.

Lesson plan Divide students into small groups of 4. Ask the following openers for group discussion: What is the Hellgate High School definition of being “on time” for class? What are the benefits of being on time for class? What happens to teaching and learning when you are not on time (tardy) for class? Report out. Share semester one tardy data for establishment of “problem behavior.” SEMESTER ONE: 5,145 TARDIES MARKED IN ZANGLE! Share the HHS behavior expectation for on time behavior…in your seat, with materials, ready to go. Explain precisely what that looks like for your unique classroom setting. Share with students MBI plan for acknowledging and reinforcing positive behavior: K Koupons for weekly and monthly prize drawings. Prizes include gift certificates to local businesses, coffee cards for the Leaky Cauldron, front of the line passes for the cafeteria, preferred parking spaces, and more. Class based rewards. In-class treats. Show behavior expectation lesson video: 5-6 minutes. Explain that we as teachers want to recognize and reinforce positive behavior. Give the following task: Each group must come up with one weekly, class-based reward for meeting this expectation. As a class, we will vote on the best one and implement it as class-based positive reinforcement.
