Who are They? The Community Foundation was established in 1988 as a charity and limited company to benefit communities particularly, although not exclusively, in Tyne & Wear and Northumberland.

What's their purpose? Their purpose is to be the hub for community philanthropy in the area – “inspiring and supporting giving that strengthens communities and enriches local life”. To do this they –Enable effective giving by people and business. –Support organisations and individuals with money, time and expertise. –Inform and influence issues affecting our communities.

The money! In the financial year 2012-13, the Community Foundation managed an endowment of £53m, held 300 donor funds and awarded more than £5m in grants to over 1,600 local groups and individuals, within Tyne and Wear and Northumberland. Grants awarded range from £250 up to £35,000 (majority under £10,000) Approximately £130k only awarded in South Tyneside due to a lack of applications.

What do they fund? They support a wide range of people and causes across three broad themes: –supporting people to overcome disadvantage, –creating stronger communities, –making the area a good place to live. Each of the 300 funds they manage will have a different focus.

Application Process 2 2.Some funds are accessed through specific proposal calls; –Advertised on the foundation website, –these have their own application forms, –tend to only be available once a year, –are usually the larger funds, –timescales vary but are published along with the call for proposals.
