5 Rothera Research Station Location: 67°34’S, 68°08’W, Rothera Point, Adelaide Island, Antarctic Peninsula Established: 1975 Personnel: 100+ in summer, 22 in winter Science: Marine and terrestrial biology, geology, glaciology, meteorology and atmospheric science. Logistics centre for field science. Living: Bransfield House (kitchen, library, bar, offices, laboratories, operations control tower), Admirals House and Giants House (accommodation) Facilities: Boatshed, wharf, dive store, laboratories, 900m crushed gravel runway, hangar, fuel farm, workshops, garage, generator shed, water plant, sewage plant Wildlife: Penguins, seals, whales, birds Temperatures: 0 to +5°C in summer, -5 to -20°C in winter

9 Halley V Research Station Location: 75°35’S, 26°34’W, Brunt Ice Shelf, Antarctica Established: 1956 Personnel: 90+ in summer, 16 in winter Science: Primarily atmospheric sciences, but also survey, geology and glaciology Facilities: Laws Building (living & accommodation, kitchen, library, bar, offices, laboratories), Drewry Building (accommodation), Piggott Building (offices), Simpson Building (science), Clean Air Sector Laboratory (science), Garage Wildlife: Penguins (including emperor colony), seals, whales, birds Temperatures: -10 to 0°C in summer, -20 to -55°C in winter

18 Signy Research Station Location: 60°43’S, 45°36’W, Factory Cove, Borge Bay, Signy Islands, South Orkney Islands Established: 1947 year-round, 1996+ summer-only Personnel: 8 in summer, 0 in winter (closed) Science: Penguin, seabird and seal biology, terrestrial biology related to the southern ocean ecosystems and climate change, long-term monitoring Facilities: Sorlle House (accommodation, laboratories, living), other buildings provide storage and power and water. In addition there are four small huts around the Island Wildlife: Penguins, seals, whales, birds Temperatures: 0 to +20°C in summer, 0 to -40°C in winter

19 Signy Research Station

20 King Edward Point Research Station Location: 54°17’S, 36°30’W, King Edward Point, Cumberland East Bay, South Georgia Established: 1909 (BAS 1969-1982 & 2001-present) Personnel: 18 in summer, 10 in winter Administration: BAS runs KEP on behalf of the Government of South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands Science: Applied fisheries research Facilities: James Cook Laboratory (laboratories, communications room, offices, library). Everson House (living, accommodation), Larsen House (accommodation, offices, kitchen, dining room, medical centre). Carse House (Government Officer accommodation). Boatshed (5 inshore boats, workshops, generators, net store). Electrical power is supplied from a hydro-electric power station commissioned in December 2008. Wildlife: Penguins, seals, whales, birds, reindeer, rats(!) Temperatures: -15°C to +20°C throughout the year

22 Bird Island Research Station Location: 54°00’S, 38°03’W, Bird Island, South Georgia Established: 1957 (1957-1982 intermittent, continuous from 1982-present) Personnel: 10 in summer, 4 in winter Science: Seabird and seal biological research, southern ocean ecosystem dynamics, long-term monitoring Facilities: Prince House (living, accommodation, offices, laboratories), Generator shed (generators, battery bank, fire pumps). Beck House (workshop, storage, waste management) Wildlife: Penguins, seals, birds (albatross breeding sites) Temperatures: -10°C to +10°C throughout the year
