3 The ideal exchange candidate... Has a good academic record Displays personal initiative Is interested in immersing himself/herself in all aspects of school and family life abroad Understands that adaptation is a two way street Subscribes to the “glass is half full” theory Is proud of Collingwood and acts as an ambassador by upholding and embodying Collingwood’s ideals and standards.

4 1.Research the country/school you wish to visit. 2.Complete application form WITH PARENTS and hand in to Ms. Thureau. 3.Upon completion of paperwork, applicants will be interviewed; four-strandedness and academic standing will be taken into consideration. 4.Successful students will be notified. 5.The international coordinator begins the matching process. The exchange process:

5 Successful candidates will... Speak with each of their teachers to determine what school work must be addressed while away on exchange. *Particular attention paid to Math, Science and languages. Be willing to host a student for 6-8 weeks - usually from your exchange school, but not always. The student may also be older. Begin communication with your host family and advise Collingwood coordinator of plans and any subsequent change in plans. Attend to all travel arrangements - including visa, health vaccinations/insurance etc...

6 Your end of the bargain while abroad: Fulfill all obligations as outlined in the contract for Round Square Exchanges (included in application form) Abide by all rules of host family (may include doing chores, meeting curfews etc...) Your host family may be perfect or not-so-perfect; you may need to learn the art of adaptation! Abide by host school rules and regulations (may include wearing their uniform, completing class assignments etc...) Make the best of all situations and have fun!

7 Parental Obligations: Please remember the following... Your child has stepped up to a wonderful opportunity; allow them to have it! This is not a vacation, this is an exchange. When receiving a tearful phone call (usually week one), realize this is part of the experience. You may know how to solve problems, even from a distance, but leave this to the exchange coordinators on both ends, and more importantly to your child. Please allow the Collingwood coordinator to address major concerns.
