5 Forms of Asbestos n Naturally occurring mineral n 86 types, only six are regulated  Chrysotile  Amosite  Crocidolite  Tremolite  Actinolite  Anthophylite

6 Chrysotile n White asbestos n “Serpentine” n 95% of asbestos- containing products

7 Amosite n Brown asbestos n 4% of asbestos- containing products

8 Crocidolite n Blue asbestos n Less than 1% of asbestos-containing products

9 Other Forms n Tremolite n Anthophylite n Actinolite n Trace use only

10 Properties of Asbestos n Fire resistant n Chemical resistant n Is a good binder n Can be milled and woven

11 Asbestos Fibers n Occur in bundles n Bundles can break apart into fibers that can break into smaller and smaller fibers n Smallest fibers are so tiny the can only be seen with an electron microscope

13 Historical Use n Pre 1930s  Long fibers - 10% of yield  Woven products - curtains, gaskets n Post 1930s  Shorter fibers  Added to roofing tar n Post 1950s  Expansion of industrial, commercial uses

15 Historical Exposure n Generally many times greater than today n No good health data on low dose exposure, so no dose considered safe n PEL =.1 fibers per cubic cm of air n Monitoring must be performed to determine exposure

17 Health Effects n Asbestos related diseases  Asbestosis  Lung Cancer  Mesothelioma n High exposure n No immediate symptoms n Delayed disease

18 Route of Exposure n Acute health effects n Inhalation  Asbestos must be airborne  Intact asbestos products do not pose a health risk

19 Asbestosis n Scarring of the lung n Not a cancer n Found with long term exposure n Difficult to breathe n No treatment

20 Lung Cancer n May be caused by other agents besides asbestos n Typically occurs because of long-term exposure n Smoking increases risk 50 to 90 times n Treatable with early detection

22 Mesothelioma n Cancer of the lining of the chest or abdominal cavity n Asbestos exposure only known cause n Can arise after limited, high-intensity exposure n Typically fatal within one year n Driver for regulating very low level exposures

23 Asbestos Deaths n According to CDC:  77 deaths from asbestosis in 1968  1,493 deaths from asbestosis in 2000  Overtook black lung deaths in 1998  Up to 40-year delay from exposure to illness  Asbestos-related disease expected to peak in 2010 Source: Lewiston Morning Tribune, 7/23/04

24 Asbestos n Friable asbestos (EPA)  can be reduced to powder by hand pressure when it is dry n Types  Thermal systems insulation (TSI)  Surface-applied materials  Popcorn ceilings (textural)  Sprayed-on fireproofing  L&I Class I Material (TSI & Surfacing)  L&I Class III Material (Includes TSI & Surfacing)  Maintenance and repair  Limited amounts of material may be removed

25 Miscellaneous Material n Non-friable n L&I Classes II and IV  Class II “Not TSI or Surfacing Material”  Floor tile and sheeting, mastics  Roofing and siding shingles  Asbestos-containing wallboard  Class IV custodians work on or around asbestos-containing materials without disturbing them (i.e., buffing floors)

26 Asbestos Classes (L&I) n Class I – Abatement requires certified companies and workers  TSI and surface-applied material n Class II – Abatement typically requires certified companies and workers  Resilient flooring, roofing, siding n Class III – Requires 16-hour training  Usually used in K-12 schools; maintenance work n Class IV – Requires 2-hour awareness training  For general maintenance and operation work  Shops, maintenance mechanics, custodians

34 Pre-Construction n Before beginning a project in which building materials will be DISTURBED  Determine if asbestos is present (or presumed present)  Determine if asbestos (or presumed asbestos) will be disturbed  Abate asbestos (or presumed asbestos) before demolition

35 Locating Asbestos n A good faith inspection or survey is required for all construction/demolition work. Exceptions:  All construction materials are wood, glass or metal  If no asbestos disturbed, a “reasonable certainty” document n Copy of asbestos good faith inspection must be present at the work site n Identifies materials containing > 1% for EPA requirements n Identifies materials containing any detectable amounts of asbestos for employee protection purposes

36 Asbestos Abatement n Asbestos abated prior to any demolition in the work area n May be provisions for “discovered” asbestos-containing materials n All potentially exposed workers must be asbestos awareness trained  Training must be tailored to the specific work environment

37 Signs and Labels n Signs  Regulated areas n Labels  All products, including raw material, mixtures, scrap, waste, debris, and their containers

40 Regulated Areas n Signs immediately visible on all approaches n Monitoring outside regulated area for Class I and Class II n Barricade tape or other barriers optional n Good faith inspection available on site n Must be competent person on site (40-hr supervisor)

41 Discovered Material n Asbestos materials should be abated before construction project begins n What if you find some not previously identified?  Stop work immediately  Tell Construction Coordinator  Area must be isolated until cleared by sampling  Material evaluated  If asbestos, must be removed before continuing project

42 Identifying a Release n An asbestos release results in debris:  Visibly damaged asbestos-containing material  Dust or remnants of broken asbestos- containing material fallen on floors or on other surfaces

43 Recognize Damaged Asbestos n Torn insulation covering n Crumbling floor tile n Water-damaged or broken ceiling tiles n Damaged popcorn ceilings n Visible debris

44 Asbestos Debris n If you find asbestos debris:  Do not clean it up  Stay out of the area  Report it to your supervisor  Supervisors report asbestos debris to Construction Coordinator

45 Medical Surveillance n General Construction  Wear a respirator  Respiratory protection program  Physician exam dependent on questionairre n Asbestos exposure (anticipated or real)  30 days/year in asbestos work  30 days/year exposure above the PEL  Examination by physician

47 Summary n Asbestos is only dangerous if airborne n Asbestos in good condition is not harmful n Do not disturb asbestos n Obey warning signs and use protective measures n Report damaged asbestos or debris to your supervisor
