1 Chemistry Basic Lab Safety
Doing Things SAFELY is not just the right way to work it’s the only way!

2 Introduction Laboratory Safety 29 CFR 1910.1450
Laboratory operations present special health hazards that may not exist in other types of workplaces due to the exposure to a variety of chemicals, and beside these hazards there other dangers including fires, explosions. OSHA requires labs to have a special written plan to keep employees safe, called “Chemical Hygiene Plan” . Laboratory Safety 29 CFR

3 Basic Lab Safety Guidelines is aimed to minimize or eliminate hazards in the Labs of Chemistry Department Knowing them before you enter Lab and abiding by these guidelines all times is critical!!!

4 Before Lab Work, Get to Know:
Hazards of materials & agents and their prescribed safety procedures

5 Also Get to Know: Emergency spill procedures, use of adsorbents and disinfectants Designated escape route and alternate Location of fire extg., eye wash, shower, first aid, and spill kits

6 PERSONAL SAFETY

7 While Working in the Lab:
Shoes with full coverage and good grip soles Restrain long hair, loose clothing (Thobe, Goutrah) and jewelry Shorts or cutoffs must be covered Use appropriate eye, skin, and hand protection

8 While Working in the Lab
Lab coats, aprons, and other protective clothing should be worn

9 While Working in the Lab Safe Behavior
Do not engage in horseplay, pranks or other acts of mischief in a chemistry lab Never eat or drink in the lab. Support all beakers and flasks with clamps.

10 While Working in the Lab
Report all: Accidents Injuries Fires Spills

11 Eye protection Protects against risk of
flying objects or dust particles splashes of hazardous materials harmful rays

12 Safety Glasses Unbreakable lenses of plastic or tempered glass
For light-to-moderate work Can be prescription lenses Do not interfere with contact lenses

13 Goggles Work with significant risk of splash of chemicals or projectiles Can be worn over prescription glasses

14 PERSONAL SAFETY Eye protection
Working in the lab would necessitate regular safety glasses or chemical safety goggles

15 Face Shield Work with significant risk of splash on face or possible explosion Face shield protects face adequately but not eyes

16 Hand Protection Gloves are required to protect your hands against
abrasions cuts punctures snags chemical burns thermal burns and temperature extremes

17 Hand Protection Requires selection of the appropriate chemical resistant gloves

18 While Working in the Lab:
Handle volatiles in a chemical fume hood

19 Summary Wear protective goggles and lab coat whenever heating or pouring hazardous chemicals Do not undertake any work unless the appropriate safety precautions are adopted

20 Safety Measures In Labs
Do Not put your nose over the container, waft the fumes toward your nose with one hand

21 Safety Measures In Labs
Use mechanical transfer devices Never use mouth pipetting

22 Safety Measures In Labs
Never taste any chemicals Never pour water into a concentrated acid. Acid should be poured slowly into water

23 Lab Safety

24 Lab Safety Use Clamps to Hold Hot Tubes
Never look into a container as you are heating it Never point the end of a test tube being heated at yourself or others Never heat in a closed container

25 Lab Safety Always Read The Labels

26 Lab Safety

27 Lab Safety Compressed Gases Cylinders should be Fixed Properly

28 Lab Safety Good housekeeping

29 Before Leaving the Lab:
Turn off: Gas Water Power supplies Vacuum lines Compression lines Heating apparatus

30 Before Leaving the Lab:
Identify and package waste, dispose properly Lock/out and tag/out defective equipment Decontaminate work surfaces and equipment Return unused equipment, apparatus, etc. Close and lock door

31 Health & Hygiene Do not store food or beverages in lab refrigerators.
Wash well before leaving lab. Remove lab coat prior to leaving lab for lunch or coffee breaks

32 . LABORATORY SAFETY EQUIPMENT Safety Showers
Safety showers are used to extinguish fire, wash off hazardous substances from the skin of personnel.

33 . LABORATORY SAFETY EQUIPMENT Eye Wash Stations
Eye wash station are used to flush the eyes if hazardous substances are splashed into them

34 . LABORATORY SAFETY EQUIPMENT Fire Extinguishers
Fire extinguishers are used to extinguish or control small-scale fire

35 'I was on fire': Four students burned when science teacher's experiment goes horribly wrong
Dane Neuberger, 15, suffered second-degree burns Students screamed during chaos at Minnesota school It happened when flame did not stay in methanol bottle Read more:  Horrific: Dane Neuberger, of Maple Grove, Minnesota, was the most seriously injured of four students who were hurt by the accident.

36 . LABORATORY SAFETY EQUIPMENT Fireproof Blankets
Fireproof blankets are used to wrap a burning victim or to control small-scale fire in the lab

37 EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT In the event of fire or other emergency, the following procedures apply: When you have fire on your clothes or body You should immediately either drop to the floor and role or go to the emergency shower. Once the fire is extinguished, chill any burns with cool water and seek medical attention. In case of a small-scale fire, use Fire Extinguisher or Fire blanket to extinguish or control it.

38 EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT In the event of a big fire/blaze in the lab,
Shout “Fire” to alert others and evacuate the room through the nearest safe exit ASAP. Call 999 (Emergency), 444 (Security), 3333 (Medical center) and the PI of the lab. When Fire alarm is triggered, proceed quickly to the nearest exit but don’t panic Do not return to the building until the "All Clear" is given by the Security Manager.

39 EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT Chemical spills
Establish what material has been spilled and what personal protective measures should be followed. This information can be obtained from a MSDS from the Chem Alert Database. Acids or Alkalis - first neutralize then absorb with paper towel, cloth or mop Mercury - cover with sulfur then remove with dustpan and placed it in a sealed container

40 Weekly Lab Checks Eye wash (purge) Fire extinguisher First Aid Kit
Fume Hood Tubing, pressurized connections Chemical storage
