16 New look - Unit of Competency UNIT CODESFLSOP009 UNIT TITLE Develop a floristry product range APPLICATION This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to strategically manage product development within a floristry business. It requires the ability to research the market, analyse product establishment issues, determine pricing, establish the product, and monitor and evaluate its success. Development can apply to a new, enhanced or specialised range of products of any style. This unit applies to all industry sectors and environments including retail, studio or online floristry businesses and those that specialise in corporate or special events. It applies to senior personnel who operate with significant autonomy and are responsible for making strategic business and product development decisions. This includes product development managers, marketing managers, operations or general managers, floral designers, store managers and owner–operators. No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication. PREREQUISITE UNIT Nil COMPETENCY FIELD Floristry Sales and Operations UNIT SECTOR Floristry ELEMENTSPERFORMANCE CRITERIA Elements describe the essential outcomes Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. 1.Research the market. 1.1 Focus product research according to organisational business objectives. 1.2 Access information sources for floristry market trends, distribution and marketing networks.

17 Incorporating Foundation Skills FOUNDATION SKILLS This section describes those language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills that are essential to performance. SKILLSDESCRIPTION Reading skills to:interpret complex research documents that relate to floristry product or design trends, market statistics and consumer preferences. Writing skills to:develop and document complex product implementation plans in a style and format readily accessible to floristry personnel. Oral communications skills to: provide clear and unambiguous instructions to others when coordinating product establishment and making changes to product range. Numeracy skills to:complete complex budgetary costings. Learning skills to:research, identify, collect, and analyse primary and secondary data on current market trends, competitors’ product range and target market product preferences. Problem-solving skills to: identify non-performing products and rationalise or delete from range. Initiative and enterprise skills to: proactively seek new and innovative product opportunities. Teamwork skills to:seek feedback from distributors and staff on product success. Planning and organising skills to: collect and evaluate research data to inform product development plans. Self-management skills to: take responsibility for product development initiatives from initial research through to product establishment and monitoring. Technology skills to:use online information systems to research information.

19 New look Assessment Requirements that specify evidence TITLE Assessment Requirements for SFLSOP009 Research, assess and develop a floristry product range PERFORMANCE EVIDENCE Evidence of the ability to: develop two floristry product ranges from initial research through to product establishment and monitoring: 1.a suite of display or stock items including ancillary merchandise 2.one custom made product range for a particular type of occasion to be chosen from: annual celebratory days funerals parties weddings. KNOWLEDGE EVIDENCE Demonstrated knowledge of: sources of information on floristry industry products: distribution organisations grower associations industry associations suppliers

20 Assessment Requirements that detail conditions TITLE Assessment Requirements for SFLSOP009 Research, assess and develop a floristry product range ASSESSMENT CONDITIONS Assessment must ensure use of: a real or simulated business operation for which floristry products can be developed computers, printers the Internet and information programs used to source industry, product and supplier information software programs currently used by the floristry industry to develop and record: product implementation plans price lists and product description sheets in-house price lists and product description sheets. people with whom the individual can interact for all communication aspects of the unit; these can be people in an industry workplace or people who participate in role plays or simulated activities, set up for the purpose of assessment, within a training organisation.
