TEMPERATE RAIN FOREST CARRINGTON SHOOK AND MICHAEL MOORE

INTRODUCTION Located along the northwestern coast of North America Forest stretches 1,200 miles along the Pacific coast This rainforest has a major change in seasons It covers 75 million acres of earth The trees here may be 500 up to 1000 years old and trucks can be more than 100 feet around

SOIL TYPE High in nutrients Many organisms die and other organisms help them decompose and return to the soil “Root Mats” are dark and moist

CLIMATE: A lot of precipitation At least 200 cm of precipitation in warmer areas Snow is more likely in higher elevations Average temperature is always above 32◦ The warmest would be 68◦

FUN FACTS The largest of the temperate rainforests are found in North America This rainforest receives about 60-200 inches of rain annually Because of a lot of rain fall trees grow extremely high The northwest is home to two thirds of all the temperate rainforests in the world They have one dry season and then one long wet season

LIVING ANIMALS Banana Slug Clark’s Nutcracker Blue Grouse Cougars Black Bear

ADAPTATIONS Mosses and ferns grow on top of other plants so they can reach light. Cool temperatures lead to slow decomposition so seedlings grow on certain logs so they can take advantage of the nutrients from the fallen logs. Animals have to adapt to the changing seasons. For example the black bear has to adapt to being hot in the summer because he is normally used to the winter and being at an average temperature because of his fur.

COMPETITIONS Sunlight, food, water, and living space are needed by all living things In order for each living organism to get the best of each of these they have to compete for it Animals compete most often compete for food Plants compete for water and space

NEGATIVE HUMAN IMPACT Humans are cutting down many of the trees The lands and waters have made it be insecure for thousands of residents to live here

POSITIVE HUMAN IMPACT In 1991 some companies worked together to form the Global Forest and Trade Network A protection plan has been started to help protect 400,000 Kit lope Valley Management practices such as forestry and agriculture
