10. ADAPTATIONS Mosses and ferns grow on top of other plants so they can reach light. Cool temperatures lead to slow decomposition so seedlings grow on certain logs so they can take advantage of the nutrients from the fallen logs. Animals have to adapt to the changing seasons. For example the black bear has to adapt to being hot in the summer because he is normally used to the winter and being at an average temperature because of his fur.
