2 What is ASDA? History of ASDA

3 American Student Dental Association (ASDA) Largest national organization fully dedicated to dental students and their affairs Compromised of 62 chapters from U.S. Dental Schools Students from these dental schools form ASDA’s government and membership

4 Mission Statement The American Student Dental Association is a national student-run organization that protects and advances the rights, interests and welfare of dental students. It introduces students to lifelong involvement in organized dentistry and provides services, information, education, representation and advocacy.

6 Advocating the Issues The American Dental Political Action Committee (ADPAC) is the bipartisan legislative sector of the ADA. It gives a political voice to dental students and dentists alike ADPAC supports members of Congress who favor legislative issues that reduce barriers to car, decreasing student loan interest, and increasing community dental health programs.

8 Student Debt Dental School tuition has almost doubled in the past 12 years. Student Loan debt has surpassed credit card debt in the U.S. and is over $1 trillion ASDA is working to collaborate with many organizations to raise the awareness that rising student debt has on health care. ASDA is supporting an increase in access to need-based student aid, Income-Based Repayment, and public service loans Promotion of stronger regulations for the protection of private student loan borrowers.

9 Student Loan Forgiveness Act of 2012 Forgive outstanding student loan debt for those who have made payments equal to 10 percent of their discretionary income for 10 years Capping interest rates on federal loans at 3.4% Allow graduates who enter certain public service professions to have their loans forgiven in five years instead of ten

10 ASDA Policy on Licensure Licensure requirement should:  Be a non-patient exam  Be administered the final year of dental school  Provide remediation opportunities  Guarantee anonymity of candidates and examiners  Administered by calibrated examiners  Not include a written exam that duplicates Part I or II NDBE  Be offered at reasonable cost  Be universally accepted by all state boards of dentistry  Be psychometrically sound

11 Midlevel Providers Policy Only a qualified dentist should perform the following function, including but not limited to:  Examination, diagnosis, and treatment planning  Prescribing work authorizations  Performing irreversible dental procedures  Prescribing drugs and/ or other medications

12 Barriers to Care 47 million Americans are affected by Barriers to care Over 16 million children in the U.S. did not see a dentist in 2009. There has been expanded function of dental assistants in 29 states and 53 countries. Barriers to care include: financial, geographical, cultural or ethnic, language, poor health literacy or educational, etc.

13 Breaking Barrier to Oral Health Act of 2011 Helps oral health stakeholders at the state and local levels form public-private partnerships to improve oral health education and dental disease prevention and reduce barriers to oral care Offers support for local and state programs to provide free dental services

17 House of Delegates Each chapter has two delegates that vote as a part of the House of Delegates Function as representatives of each dental school and work to create policy by passing resolutions on topics such as midlevel providers, dental education, etc. Vote for the Executive Committee and Speaker of the House of Delegates

18 Executive Committee The ASDA President and two Vice Presidents Represent and speak on behalf of ASDA with other dental organizations Oversee the Board of Trustees

20 Speaker of the House of Delegates Presides over the House of Delegates meetings at Annual session Leads the resolution making process Responsible for acting on resolutions passed by the House of Delegates Non-voting member of the Board of Trustees

22 The Districts ASDA is comprised of eleven districts Each district has a Trustee which is elected at annual session. The trustee functions as acting as the official liaison between the local chapters and national ASDA.

24 The Board of Trustees The eleven District Trustees form the Board of Trustees Oversee all activities of the association, approve the annual budget, and develop ASDA’s strategic plan. Appoints Council Chairs, Editorial Board, Legislative Coordinators, Externs, and and Executive Director
