2 British in India How did the British East India company control and rule India? The British east India Company had its own soldiers and forts. It hired Indian soldiers known as sepoys, to protect the company’s interests in the region. What are sepoys? An Indian soldier hired by the British East India Company to protect the company’s interest in the region.

3 Sepoy Mutiny –What do Indians call it? The first war of Independence –When and Why did is start? 1857, it started because a growing Indian distrust of the British led to a Revolt. o What is important about the Cow to Hindus? The cow was scared to Hindus

4 The Pig to Muslims? The pig was taboo to Muslims –Why were the sepoys arrested? They refused to refill the rifles with the new bullets – What did they do? The refused –Why did the revolt not last? Because Indian troops crushed the Rebellion

5 The Pig to Muslims? Cont. –What were the results of the uprising? As a result, the British Parliament transferred the powers of the East Indian Company directly to the British government. –What title did Queen Victoria take and when? 1876 the title of Empress of India o What did India become? The “Jewel in the crown”

6 Benefits of British Rule o What were 3 benefits of British rule (and their limitations)? It brought order and stability to a society that had been badly divided by civil war; It also led to a fairly honest and efficient government; British rule was degrading, even for the newly educated upper classes.

7 Cost of British Rule o What were 5 costs of British rule? Economic ; taxes ; jobs; education; disrespect

8 Indian Nationalist Movement –Who was Gandhi? He was a lawyer, he was aware of racial exploitation of Indians living in south Africa – Why is he important? His movement lead to Indian Independence – What did he do? He set up a movement based on nonviolent resistance. – How did he protest? He went to South Africa to work in a law firm serving Indian workers there. – What were his two goals? His goal was to force the British to improve the lot of the poor and grand independence to India.
