Collect your child from the civic hall in Whitehaven after the show. We have finished our class novel this week. A book which we have all enjoyed. We have written school reports for one of the main characters and book blurbs to encourage other to read this story. In maths we have been tackling co-ordinates in up to four quadrants. It is important to remember which co-ordinate to read first. I wish you all a safe and happy half term. It will be nice to return in a week to some sunnier and warmer days- here’s hoping! Please remind your child that it is unadvisable to bring expensive or precious items to school. These may become a target for theft or damage. If your child does wish to bring such things to school they will need to be kept in the office. Accordingly we ask Key Stage Two children to limit the stationery equipment they bring into class to just a pen, a couple of pencils, a rubber and sharpener. Thank you for your assistance in this matter. This week we have built models of bridges using our designs. We had to decide which construction kit would be most suitable for the shape and style of our bridge. In literacy we have written our own poems about sounds in school. We followed the pattern of the poem ‘Cows Moo’ which we have really enjoyed reading.

2 Sing Up!- Friday 24 th February We have had very little money back yet to fund the cost of transport to the Whitehaven Civic Hall. We are asking for £2 towards transport for every member of Key Stage Two. Please remember that you are responsible for collecting your child from the civic hall after the show. If there is an issue with transport home, you will need to let Mrs Figes know as soon as possible. No child will be allowed home without a suitable adult collecting them. Bingo event- Wednesday 28 th March Friends of School are hosting a bingo event towards the end of the spring Term. All monies raised will go back into school to help bring down the cost of school visits, to fund transport and buy equipment and furnishings. Please donate prizes for the raffle. We also would love cakes to sell back to you on the night. Internet Safety On Tuesday you should have received an internet safety booklet for you to read. It is designed with parents and carers in mind. Recent research has shown that 77% of parents think they know what their child does online, however 33% of children claim that their parents are unaware of what they do. We have been talking to the children about internet safety with the children. If you want more information about this please go to www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents or our school website.www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents School Meals Mrs McLellan’s kitchen was recently inspected by the council and has done really well. The inspector said: ‘ Very good meal take up- around 88%...... The meals are freshly cooked straight from ovens and pans- portion sizes are good….. Kitchen cleaned to good standard and paperwork up to date.” They concluded that the kitchen continued to give wonderful value for money, healthy and nutritious meals. Well done !! Please note : from the summer term, a cost of a school meal will be £2 a day ( £10 a week) owing to rising food costs. We have had no price rise for several years and the school have had to absorb the short-fall which we can no longer afford. Thank you for your understanding. Sports Drinks It has come to my attention that the local shop has starting selling cheap ‘sports’ drinks, and that many of our pupils are having one before school to top off their breakfast. Teachers have noticed that many children seem ‘silly and excitable’ during the first lesson of the morning and then seem to get tired and ‘ratty’ as the day wears on. This could be in response to the sugar and artificial stimulants in these drinks. As a school we do not recommend the use of sports drinks and would suggest healthier breakfast alternatives.
