12 1520 – Ferdinand Magellan, the first European explorer came to Chile, he landed on Chiloe Island. In 1541 Pedro de Valdivia’s expedition reached the Mapocho Valley in Chile. Santiago was founded that year. The Spanish attacks into Chile went only as far as the Rio Biobio.

13 1810– The beginning of Chile’s independence from Spain. 1890’s – Chile’s civil war. The political state of Chile was unstable throughout the beginning of the 20 th century. Democracy was established in 1989.

32 The food in Chile varies due to Chile’s topography. Fish – Fruites & Vegetables - Beef The most popular meal in Chile is: Lomo a lo Pobre A huge piece of beef, covered by two eggs and buried under chips.

33 Empanadas- Similar to Borekas, Empanandas are turnovers with different fillings. Humitas- Corn tamales. Parillada- A mixed grill of internal parts! Curanto- A stew made from fish, shellfish, chicken, pork, lamb, beef and potato. Wine – Chile ‘s wines are known all around the world. Pisco – is the popular drink.
